Still going to be a 'no' from me, dog.

That's a good description of the first one. Objectively an average eco-message movie, but really pretty to look at. I'll probably see this one in theaters too if it gets a similar response.

Same. The first one was at least a great theater experience, even if only for the visual spectacle.

This will likely go up there with the first Avatar and the Disney Star Wars movies, in that I will see it in a good theater, enjoy it immensely, and never have an itch to watch it again.

How is this movie not going to be a copy and paste of the first movie, except on water? I'll just wait for "Avatar on Ice".

Reverend J: "Avatar on Ice".

Personally, I'm holding out for "Blues in Space."

I'd say it was a good ripoff of Ferngully.
What movie is he ripping off this time?
Oh wait, there was a Ferngully 2.

Good afternoon, everyone at Frak.com.

My name is James Francis Cameron. I am an up and coming director seeking information on how to make a successful film, and heard from an associate named Kathleen Kennedy that this is where all the experts are.

Any advice that you can give me to apply to my career moving forward would be greatly appreciated. For clarity, please reference Ferngully or Dances with Wolves.

Thank you for your time,
-JFC

I walked out of the first one. I couldn't stand the hackneyed plot and the visuals are underwhelming AF after all that hype. I have zero desire to see this or any other retread of such a childish story. Much like Star Wars, I have simply matured past the target demographic for this crap.

James Cameron's Avatar series has evolved over the years: from an unprecedented box office smash to semi-forgotten cultural artifact to most anticipated follow-up of the year.

The gall of making that claim when Wakanda Forever hasn't even left theaters yet.

// also: [citation needed], and the trailer doesn't count

It's so funny how emotionally invested some Farkers (and beyond) are in pre-emptively hating Avatar 2. It's been a multi-year hatefest, and the hive-mind has demanded you hate it, and you're committed now. Your ego is on the line now, and pride won't let you admit you might have been completely wrong this whole time. It's like partisanship---you've cast your lot, and you're going down with the ship regardless of what the reality is.

Meanwhile, let's see what the reactions are, from audience members who have actually seen it:

"Unexpectedly intimate emotional scope."

"[Cameron's] sweetest, gentlest, most personal film. Possibly even his most emotional. It revisits all his greatest hits, but it's always totally sincere."

"Light years better than the first & easily one of the best theatrical experiences in ages," saying he was not particularly eager for an Avatar sequel but now "can't *wait* to see Avatar 3."

"Bigger, better & more emotional than 'Avatar,' the film is visually breathtaking, visceral and incredibly engrossing."

"A staggering achievement,"

"The story, the spectacle, the spirituality, the beauty - this is moviemaking & storytelling at its absolute finest."

But this one has water!

Water!

Or (and these sound about 10,000 times as likely):

However, reaction in the UK has been less uncritical. The Guardian's chief film critic Peter Bradshaw has led the charge, saying "Avatar: The Way Of Water is a silly, soggy, motion-smoothed epic of solemnity without a single interesting visual image", while the Daily Telegraph's Robbie Collin posted a cryptic "grimace" emoji.
Christina Newland, lead critic of the i newspaper, was also less than impressed, writing: "Avatar: The Way of Water is a film to be admired more than loved - some remarkable spectacle, some throwback to Titanic set pieces, some really lovely visual flourishes. But it's also interminably, ploddingly overlong, and more impressive than truly absorbing."
Empire magazine's Amon Warmann was a little more generous, but still equivocal, writing: "Liked it, didn't love it. The good news is that 3D is good again (yay!), and the action is pretty incredible (especially in the final act). But many of the storylines feel like they have to stop and start, and the high frame rate was hiat & miss for me."

I will be shocked if this snippet right here isn't the most accurate thing written about this flick yet:

"Avatar: The Way of Water is a film to be admired more than loved - some remarkable spectacle, some throwback to Titanic set pieces, some really lovely visual flourishes. But it's also interminably, ploddingly overlong, and more impressive than truly absorbing."

Because this describes Abyss and Titanic to a T.

Nah, I've always said I wouldn't be shocked if 2 made money, but I see no market for 3,4, and 5. And I'm the guy who dislikes every Cameron movie except T1 and Aliens. I just don't equate making money with quality.

James, I know you have trouble with more subtle points of a narrative, but try reading the thread again. But hey, big T2 fan here. Perfect movie for my 11 year old self, so you have that going for you. I'm sure the Snorks in Space will be a huge success.

There's tremendous nostalgia for Marvel's legacy characters though. That said, I've never seen a Marvel flick in the theater and I'm not sure I've ever watched one start to finish in one sitting.

That's the big difference between Avatar and the MCU.  Guardians of the Galaxy has blue people and a big tree , so apples to apples, Avatar is a better LOOKING movie, but Guardians of the Galaxy is way more fun to watch.  The story, the acting, the everything except the CGI is just better. Also, Lloyd Kaufman is in the prison shot. Does Avatar have Lloyd Kaufman? I think not. Advantage Marvel.

From IMDB, Fern Gully 2:
The faeries of Fern Gully must venture outside the rainforest to rescue several young animals who were captured by poachers.

The Avatar 2 summary is broad enough that it might work. I don't really care. I'm not there for the plot or character development.... Huh. A lot like porn actually.
