(Quanta Magazine)   Sorry Einstein, God does appear to play dice with the universe. He uses 4-sided dice, and they're loaded   (quantamagazine.org) divider line

Our side of the universe is left handed.  It's nothing to be ashamed of.

So Sheldon and Amy were right?

/no idea what the plot actually was, just noticed "asymmetry"

Riiiiiiiight. This totally is NOT a case of humans seeing shapes where none exist. Nope. Not at all.

And there is a really, REALLY good reason why they just happened to connect in such a way which will be explained right after this SMOKEBOMB

I'm kind of amazed we think we have enough data on A MILLION galaxies to play connect the dots with them in groups of 4 and proclaim anything.

Seems like there's a lot of ways to bunch things up, and then having confidence that this way is meaningful... And the data behind that... is incredible.

Maybe our observable universe just orbits in a larger structure and the direction of travel relative to that larger structure leads to the apparent asymmetry.

Or maybe they didn't do it right.

As a math/CS guy, if you need me to do analysis on a million points that contain distances, I could come up with all sorts of answers in short order.  Throw statistics at it, and you can get answers, but maybe not right ones.

FYI - Chien-Shiung Wu whose experiments all started this was denied a Nobel prize, while her male colleagues got one.

I'm giving these out for CRITmas.  This thread seemed like a good place to share.

You are giving me bubble sort flashbacks!

Praying Dude: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

God: Roll Wisdom check first while I check something... *Rolls 4D4*

Praying Dude : *Rolls 1D20* Ummm.... 1... is that good?

God: He he he... yeah... *Rolls 20D4* ... While trying to cross the street for the sale at the pastry stand you get hit by Truck-Kun and Isakied in to a new life as an enchanted cucumber on the world of Blue Oysteria.

Music: Dun dun dun dun da dunnnn!

The only bubblesort flashback I have is digging into a chunk of code to figure out WTF was causing a slowdown... and discovering that monstrity at it's heart.  "Easy to code" is it's only feature.
