Why bother? They'll just trade him.

Can they just take the cash option like PowerBall?

I am wearing a Wrigley Field sweatshirt I bought the last time I saw the Pirates play.   It was late September in Chicago, and the Pirates were going to the post season for the first time in a while.  I think that was 2015.

Another promising career delayed. At least until they are traded to a major league team.

not like they pick great in the first round lately anyway

of the last 20 1st rounders (2012-2022) :

7 since 2019 haven't made it up yet, but most aren't doing much anyway
3 didn't even sign
2 (shane baz and austin meadows) got traded with tyler glasnow for 1.5 years of chris archer
1 never made it to the majors
1 got 69 PA, went to korea and didn't play anywhere this year

ke'bryan hayes, kevin newman, cole tucker and travis swaggery played for them this year, only hayes doing much of anything

conner joe and reese mcguire were meh elsewhere

the previous 10 years had gerrit cole, taillon, cutch, neil walker and paul maholm all et over 10 war though, but also one of their other first overall picks bryan bullington who did nothing

1st pick in the draft and we're currently tied for 1st heading into next season. It's going to be a great year!

/at least for the first week of the season
//at least they have one of the better stadiums
///strikes and I'm out

Well, once they trade Reynolds and Hayes breaks his finger in the second inning on opening day, we'll be ready to go three for three on #1 draft pics.

Stop rewarding failure.   Just stop it.   Sure, every sport does this to increase competitive balance, since they would truly love to see every team trend towards .500 every season.   Randomize draft pick order.

No multi year contracts, every player in every sport is a free agent after every season.

The lottery is a stupid system because it doesn't stop teams from "tanking", all it does is hamper rebuilds. The 2 leagues with the most parity are the ones that (to this point) don't have draft lotteries. Hell, if there's a specific player teams are "tanking" for it may incentivize more teams to actually try to lose more games. Because hey if you can be the 3rd or 4th worst team and still get So-and-So Uberprospect, why not? So it's potentially causing the problem it's trying to stop

This is a bad an idea as the "every amateur player is a free agent". At least in terms of competitive balance

Andrew McCutchen won the MVP in 2014 and was one of the best players in MLB for the 9 years he played for the Pirates. You had so many players to choose from and you literally chose the one player who doesn't apply. That's Pirates-level failure

This is a mind-bogglingly bad idea both in terms of the business of the sport and fandom.

Maybe consider sticking to MLB The Show.

But it would be massively entertaining. Embrace the chaos.

Just for reference, go ahead and look at some of the rosters teams were trotting out during the pre-LeBron James draft year and tell me they were all trying to win

McCutchen was on track to be a possible hall of fame player, but turned into an average Joe once he had to play for a serious team.

So you think the Pirates ruined him because he played badly for other teams?

By the way, just looking it up, his WAR is high enough (8th overall since he debuted and 3rd among outfielders) and he has enough hardware (MVP, Gold Gloves) that he's probably going to the Hall of Fame. And all of his great seasons were with the team that didn't develop him
