One week from now:

"Alabama police overwhelmed as shootings spike over 400%."

Don't worry. I'm sure the Alabama legislature will address this issue and sell all the public schools to raise enough money to buy the Skeeter County Sheriff a recently decommissioned A-10.

Well, back to frivolous traffic citations.

Lots of citizen constitutional experts picking up the slack, duh

That budget math seems odd. Why are weapons permits such a big money maker? Seems like something like that would be an unreliable and sporadic revenue stream.

2022-12-07 7:25:45 AM
Does this result in fewer Alabamans? I'm fine with it.

2022-12-07 7:28:13 AM
The whole sheriff permit thing is just an excuse to deprive minorities of their rights AND fund the sheriff's department extra-legal assholery.

My guess is, there is probably a yearly renewal fee for a conceal carry permit (prior to this "constitutional carry" nonsense).  That would keep the money spigot wide open.
Imagine being so excited about carrying a concealed weapon in your XXXL sweatpants that you'd pay a yearly fee for the privilege.

Because the sheriff is using his permitting powers to ensure that they're friends, their political allies, the families of the political allies AND any one who can pay the bribes are armed to the gums.

So what I'm hearing is that the right wing assholes all registered their guns under the same corrupt umbrella organizations?
Should make it easier to track domestic terrorist groups, right? I mean if we assume that these people are doing as you say, then it's a good place to start looking for domestic terrorists.

They're literally defunding the police.

Once again, coming from the modern "conservative" every accusation is a confession.

2022-12-07 7:49:37 AM
Nah it'll be fine.

Remember: An armed society is a polite society. By making it easier for so many people to carry a concealed gun that you never know who might be ready and willing to use lethal force against you for even the slightest perceived transgressions, everyone will certainly be on their best behavior.

Crime will drop to nothing and we won't even need the police anymore, so don't worry about that loss of funding!

Since Obama era policies resulted in very large jumps of gun crime and accidental gun deaths, it's worth paying for your own gun to keep you safe from all the gun lunatics out there who are out to kill you too take your guns illegally from you

Annual renewals?
Hell annual renewals charged automatically to the credit card ir bank you used to pay for initial permit

I remember an All in the Family episode where Archie proposes his solution to hijacking as arming every passenger as they board and then collecting the guns back as they deplane.
The audience roared with laughter at the stupidity of the idea.
We've come a long way, haven't we?

I keep reading "guns save lives" on car stickers. Making it easier for average citizens to carry their own gun should make Alabama safer and need less law enforcement. It's basic logic.

I'd renewal fees are exactly the same as initial registration then the cops are ripping off their own citizens.
I just think it's weird that someone is apparently buying enough weapons with enough regularity for this to have become a steady/reliable source of income.

In a place where ANYONE can carry a weapon.

If's funny how many cops oppose literally any form of gun control when lack of gun control is the second biggest thing that makes their job so dangerous in the first place (lack of self control being the biggest).

This smells like whore sheet for more than one reason. Yeah, a bunch of bubbas won't renew their CCWs because they are poor hayseeds who never leave the county, but anyone who wants to (legally) carry outside Alabama will still have to get a license (for carry in reciprocity states).

Yep.

Cops must be the most easily frightened people in the world.

I was scared because he might have had a gun, so I shot him.
I was scared because I knew he had a gun, so I shot him.
I was scared because I knew he had a gun, but he was in a room of children so I waited outside.
I was scared the blue pickup was the same as the gray one, so I shot at them.
I was scared the firetruck the kid has was a gun, so I shot him.

Numbers...

So that county is $25 a year for a permit. $200,000 works out to around 6% of the population in the county being permitted for carry.

That's high, but it's not nearly as crazy as I was expecting (in comparison to other shall-issue states, it's still crazy).
Keep in mind that a lot of permit holders don't actually carry, it has other uses to people that own/buy guns.

I was really expecting to see that it was one of those states that allows charging a couple hundred for a permit.

And now cops in San Francisco (and if it takes off, you can bet other departments will want in on it) are trying to be allowed to let robots use lethal force, so a cop wouldn't even have to fear for ANY actual life to get away with murder.
