Or:

Hey, Mr. Underpaid Russian airman, here's $100 / Levi's jeans / chocolate bars, could you perhaps stick this box under the plane's fuel tank? Thanks!

A tiny drone carrying a few ounces of long strands of aluminum can short out major power transmission lines.

Just saying...

FTFA: The black box project is said by Ukraine's Ministry of Defence to have caused millions of US dollars' worth of damage to the Russian military in October alone. It is understood the initiative is not linked to this week's explosions at Russian air basesbut that these give a good impression as to the nature of the partnership.

So the entire article is bollocks.  No idea what the equivalent to millions of dollars has been spent on.

what's in the mysterious black box?

Well don't start nothing and there wont be nothing, Russia opened this can of worms and now they get to deal with it. I say good take the war to Russia and have them pull resources from the front to guard soft targets back home. I hope Ukraine gives as good as it has gotten.

I just get a kick out of the Russians getting so incensed that Ukraine keeps hiatting them back. And how they are finally sort of shrugging and winking that it's a turrible shame that the Russians keep having 'accidents' happen on their own soil.

Considering that Russia couldn't land a decapitation strike and Ukraine can strike deep onto Russian soil, and apparently keep out of sight, that might make some folks in Moscow real...careful of how they go about their daily constitutionals.

Just pack it with fentanyl and mix it with the snowfall, a couple grams should sort out all of moscow.

And lo, TWX was enlightened and realize why we're using the word "black."

I really hope they can start sharing photos of scenes of destruction with a masked operative in the foreground of each, holding the same mysterious black box.

But that's not what a "black box" means.

The term refers to a process, system, or machine that one has no view of the internal workings of, where the only thing one can do is supply input and observe output.  In many ways it doesn't matter how the thing actually functions, just that it functions, and what the results of that function are.

If the organization profiled in TFA is actually involved then the term might apply.  Because then the organization is doing something.  By virtue of being a black box we don't know what their processes are, we would only see the input (money, possibly staffing) and the output (Russian resources being turned into teeny-tiny bits of scrap metal), but we would know that this particular org, this particular black box, is how it's happening.

That quote I referenced says that this org is not the actor.  Therefore they don't have anything to do with it.  Therefore they're not some kind of black box that turns money into destruction of Russian resources.

Their metaphor is about as good as Katy Perry's in her song Dark Horse.

We had a similar program targeted at the north korean missile program. "Soft" deterrent". Trump axes it because soft deterrents weren't manly and then he fell in live with Kim Jong-Un.
Theres a reason north korea's rocket test success rate went from 20% to 80%

Drones are already regulated heavily here.   No POV flying, which defeats the entire purpose.

You can POV fly a drone in the U.S. if you have an observer with you that has visual line-of-sight to the drone and can communicate situational awareness to the drone pilot. It's a very sensible rule, since a POV pilot has a very limited field of view.

Why isn't there a charitable deduction for WMD?

Sorry to confuse -- my "black" remark was a reference to black money, since you said "No idea what the equivalent to millions of dollars has been spent on."

The best black boxes are used in black programs paid for with black money.  And if things are done correctly, the people who know 1) that money was spent at all, 2) what it was spent on, 3) how that thing works, and 4) what happened as a result... will all be very few in number, and quite possibly not even overlap much at all.

/I like my boxes like I like my women... well-funded.
