Finally! I'll have to pick it up this week sometime. Been waiting for it to have graphics for what feels like forever.

Can anyone with actual experience in this game give some examples of other games that, if you love them, might be an indication you would also love this? I honestly have no understanding of what this thing is supposed to be, but I've been hearing about this version's pending release for, it feels like, an eternity now. And I'm curious, but maybe also a little bit scared.

The interesting thing about Dwarf Fortress is that you play to the level that you last failed. Which will rapidly teach you that there's another fail state waiting to screw you over. Some of these are hilarious and others are fast and feel instantly unfair. There's really no other game like Dwarf Fortress, because no one else tries to simulate all the stuff going on in the game in the same way.

RimWorld is a much more accessible take on DF.  There's differences, and DF is vastly more complicated, but they vibe the same.

It's honestly kind of hard to say.  It's own sort of beast.  I can think of a dozen different games that I could draw parallels to, but they're all in different genres, and half of them were directly inspired by Dwarf Fortress.

Best I can say, if you don't want to spend money to try it, grab one of the Lazy Newb Packs depending on your OS, and give it a whirl.  That will give you some reasonable graphics, so it's exactly not like you're trying to read the Matrix, but a mostly keyboard based UI.

I bought it earlier today but haven't started playing yet because of Vampire Survivors.

Also, I am honored to be able to say that this is my first approved link in 15 years.  Still not as old as Dwarf Fortress.  And I sincerely hope both Tarn and Zach end up rolling in cash due to this.

The linked version has graphics. And music.  And a reasonable, easy to use UI.

Ok, not really on the last one.

Forgive your dislike for steam if you can. Part of the reason for the release of the game on Steam is because Zach and Tarn had a cancer scare recently and they've realized they need money because of the US medical system. Support the amazing Devs!

To be fair, though, I have been playing the game free of charge for over a decade.

Yep.  There was a game I had a pirated copy of years ago, played a lot of it - didn't even know it was pirated thought it was just one of the free ones floating around (not that it would have stopped me really but still...)  Once it went up on Steam I actually made a full price purchase on it - I could afford it then.  Figured it was only fair, even though I haven't played it in ages and I am unlikely to in the future

/it's just kinda aged out of being much fun

But not right now. Do not have $30 in the bank at all

Isn't GOG owned by CD Projekt? The company should have enough money from the Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077 to keep GOG afloat through any rough patches.

Looking at the original game, it looked a lot like Eve Online: fun to read about, but a slog to actually play.

I was never able to stand the control scheme and the matrix look. Now that at least one of those is fixed I'm in, and if the other isn't fixed they can have my money and I'll find a mod that deals with the controls.

I've played a few games like that. Video games are one of my main 2 hobbies(the other being Battletech) and I was happy to pay full price and support the devs, even if I was bad at their game.

I've bought copies for myself, my wife, my mother and father, and my brother. The Adams deserve all the money for their masterpiece. After telling them the depth of the stories this game creates they are 100% on board with trying it out.

My parents are in their mid-60's and they love PC gaming.

It's listed as second under the "Top Sellers" tag on the steam storefront page, under Apex Legends (which is F2P). That's pretty damn good for such an incredibly indie game, imo.

To be fair, the most mind-bogglingly unfair stuff has been attenuated.

I had one long-term fortress where a dwarf accidentally killed another, and the entire fortress collapsed overnight as each dwarf took turns avenging his fallen friends . . . no tantrums, just cold-blooded murder.

This was during an experiment where I had armed each and every dwarf with a cheap crossbow and was cranking out bone bolts for fortress defense, so there were literal shootouts going on all over the map.

Loyalty cascades don't happen anymore to my knowledge (not that they were ever as famous as tantrum spirals).

Publisher takes 20% of the 80% (after initial costs are covered, which is probably already done.  Other than Pax booths and new music it's not like they had to do a lot for DF).  So cut an additional 16%.  Still a decent amount and absolutely well deserved for 20 years of effort.

Well, pretty sure they're the ones that were handling the new art and sourcing the music and stuff too.  Speaking of, wonder how much Simon Swerwer et al. got.

There are some rough edges. Too much clicking to select materials. Needs a shift + click or something.

The old interface was complicated to learn, but it had the advantage of years of refinement.
