The Rams, on the other hand, don't own their first-round pick next season. And they just lost Matthew Stafford for the season. They could decide to screw the rival Niners by claiming Mayfield.

Seems like they could screw the 49ers over more by letting them have Mayfield

I can't really see anyone other than the 49ers picking up Mayfield. He'll be a free agent next year. I don't see Houston or LA being super excited to finish the season with a mediocre QB (even as a backup) when they've got no shot at the playoffs, but stranger things have happened.

I'm a pretty poor football fan, but I did really enjoy Browns games when it was Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. Even when they lost, I still liked watching the games.

No chance he sniffs the playoffs, and if he goes to the Rams, he will maybe play 4 or 5 games and then Stafford will be back next year.

I mean, if they're convinced he's not salvageable, why not rip off the band-aid and go into full rebuild mode? They can go into 2024 with massive cap space and draft capital. Sounds a lot more appealing than annually using over $50 million of cap space for a below-average QB from 2025-2028. Good organizations admit their mistakes and move on.

Broncos GM George Paton is a first-time GM who hired Hackett and traded for Wilson.  He needs a scapegoat.

If he only removes one of them, when he speaks internally to ownership, he can blame that one if the Broncos improve in 2023.  He can maybe save his job.

We can presume he has to fire Hackett at the end of the season.  If he waives Wilson as well, he pretty much admits he is not competent and should be fired.

/not saying he shouldn't be fired, but he will try to save his job

It could be about salary. Take him off waivers and you pay the remainder of the contract. Hope that he goes unclaimed and you get to negotiate a contract.

That makes sense = their turn came so late that the only folks behind them don't need a QB - Eagles, Vikes, etc
