Alex Spiro (Musk's lawyer) came over to our area and started talking to a couple folks at the desks. At this point, we had heard nothing aside from what was in Elon's ultimatum email and people were desperate for answers, so they started gathering around him. Alex said that it was good that people were gathering around since he wanted to share his thoughts with everyone.

He started talking about how Elon had launched rockets before, so we should trust his vision and we should all push the button and stay. One of the people on my team asked what Elon meant by "exceptional performance" in the email - in particular, how would this be evaluated for our team members?

At this point, Alex told everyone that he had not yet read Elon's email, and someone had to pull it up on their phone and show it to him so he could read it. He then explained how the email was intended to be motivational in nature and we just weren't used to getting emails from Elon yet but he was and "this is just how Elon talks."

...Hearing from one of Elon's closest advisors that he had not actually read the email himself but that we should nonetheless trust Elon made people feel even more uneasy and panicked about the decision (if that's even possible).

This is...something.

Those who effectively told Elmo to GFY made the right move.  Twitter's transition from garbage fire to post-nuclear wasteland happened with astonishing speed and just showed in lurid colour just how much of a colossal farking moron Elmo really is.  He may be the richest man in the world, but he is living proof you don't have to know a goddamn thing about a company to buy it and have other people run it for you -- nor do you have to know a goddamn thing about a company to buy it and think you can run it, but in that case, it helps you avoid running it straight into he ground, as we are seeing happen in real-time with Twitter.

Much like Eddie Lampert and Kmart/Sears, I, too, think this is the gambit here. There's a reason Saudi money rushed in to fill the gap left by this man's hubris. They win either way. If Twitter makes money (somehow), they do too. If it doesn't, then they paid a bargain price to make sure that widespread access exposing the crimes of their regime is shut off.

There is no long game.  He fought tooth and nail to NOT buy Twitter.  He spent almost six months desperately coming up with reasons he should be let out of the purchse contract. The Twitter shareholders had to carry him to court to force him to honor the purchase contract.  He was memlording to memelord, then swaggered around and signed a contract he had no intention of honoring, and then realized that the US court system doesn't give a shiat about edge.  He's a farkwit.  Quit acting as if he is such an uber-genius that he consciously determines every quantum interaction in the universe in real time.  He does stupid shiat because he has no filter or self-control, not because he is playing 58238290-D chess and we schlubs can't comprehend because IQ is exactly equal to bank account balance.

Thats an extremely dumb take. Why waste $45 billion dollars to destroy a single social media company that could easily be replaced by a competitor or an upstart copy cat?

Musk is very egotistical. He thinks he knew more about running a social media company than people actually running social media companies. Instead of doing research and determining the best course of action he simply did what he thought would work. When you think you the smartest person in the world, you are convinced all your ideas are golden. Twitter is showing that he doesn't know how to actually run a company. Hes a big investor and spokesperson for Tesla and SpaceX but he's not allowed to have anything yo do with day to day operations. At Twitter he has nobody babysitting him and he's trashing the place.

New platforms will replace Twitter, and they'll be harder to control.  Whack-a-mole is much easier when there's only one mole.

In this context, I tend to agree.  Musk has enough money that he can literally buy his way out of any and all problems.  Tesla has grown enough market share and manufacturing capacity to have hit critical mass, and barring a huge foundational issue with their product that causes sales to literally stop dead, it's going to continue to make money for a long while to come.  SpaceX succeeds in spite of Musk (cue Shotwell joke here), and it too has hiat critical mass as far as having a product, a repeatable strategy and success in launches, and being self-sustaining with manufacturing and their own supply lines.  Couple all that with the reality distortion field that even Jobs would have been surprised about, and Musk is literally above repercussions.

This is the problem with massive income inequality and income disparity.  At the top of the pyramid you've got people like Musk, Bezos, etc. that have amassed so much money and resources that they are for all intents and purposes immune from consequences.

I would think this if it wasn't so obvious he is so very VERY addicted to Tweeting.

He is more thirsty for likes and retweets than all those 'fitness inspiration' people out there. He doesn't want it to go dark, he wants it to be his perfect sounding echo-chamber.

I've spent 30 yrs under near continually layoff threat in the defense industry. Defense companies are going scoop up up tech workers and perhaps I'll have a chance to be layed off. I can say most people who did go out the door were better off. Except that guy who shot himself at the front gate a couple months ago. You can't take this place too serious...that includes any place. Most management operates on fear. Cultivate no fear. I have accumulated my nest egg and am ready to go. I am enjoying watching things come apart.

This just goes to show that just because somebody owns a billion dollar company doesn't mean they're a farking business genius. A company is more than just one person.
