The power infrastructure is an easy target. Anywhere there are substations, transmission lines and step down transformers there is an avenue to attack. It is also impossible to practically guard against such. Expect more of the same from the right as the world changes around them. Children, all of them, in adult bodies. The next 20 years are going to be interesting... in the Chinese curse sense.

I live in red state hell, and one thing most outsiders fail to comparand is how willing people are to sabotage their own communities.  These are deeply resentful people.  I've met town council members whose sole political goal is just to get people to clean up their yards.  You know?  Just bag up and haul off the trash in their front yards.

Not only will this fail, but places will start mysteriously burning down at the same time.  Their idea of 'love it or leave it' can be intensely localized.  Like don't you dare try to turn my town into some namby-pamby place where people mow their grass or leash their dogs.  No.  fark you.   I'll burn this town down first.  Raise taxes to fix the sewer system?  What's wrong with shiatting in hole?

The media folks seem to be going out of their way to downplay this attack.
we can't keep pretending that we can coexist peacefully with authoritarian christian churches who openly attack us, our infrastructure and constantly tell us they want to kill every liberal they can find....
If law enforcement does nothing about this, then the next attack will be even bigger and cause even more damage.

What are you kidding? White males with guns destroying property? They didn't get in trouble when they were lynching black people. They will plea bargain down to a misdemeanor Disturbing The Peace and be made heroes.

This is all getting a bit scary.  I'm a resident of Sanford NC (the place where the Proud Boys recently protested a drag event) in Lee County, which borders Moore County.

My sister-in-law's mom is being forced to have  her cancer (recently diagnosed, during the Christmas season :( ) treatments delayed because of the lack of power.

And if it's true that this outage is due resistance to another drag event, things are looking worrisome for the future of the LGBT community.

It's weird.  Things were going pretty good for us queers acceptance wise for a while... and then all of a sudden - MAGA!!

If this turns out to be organized attack by Christian extremist who were upset about a Drag Show, as many are speculating, there is gonna be major push back on the religious right in North Carolina, because it sounds like they just broke the Cardinal Rule, they messed with rich white people.

You are gonna see a lot of money going to hate groups suddenly dry up.

I began to wonder if the longer the investigation takes the more this will embolden other right-wing dips**ts to coordinate and plan. Will anyone now be surprised to see attack in more urban area next time? Would anyone be surprised to see urban (D) leaning areas attacked just before 2024 elections?

It could literally turn out to be some dumbass teens, but this is going to embolden our insurrectionist terrorist movement known as the (R)epugnants.

I am surprised it has taken this long for an attack like this to happen. It has been talked about for years only the perpetrators were always those uppity people and A-Rabs.

Of course, it could be part of the letdown these faux-patriots are feeling are feeling after the red-non-wave, so there is that too.

Whatever the case, this signals a new course of action that has finally appeared in real time in the grievance wars.

I'm sure that's completely unintentional. Plus, people are charged with making terroristic threats even when they do nothing. The laws are there, nobody wants to enforce them.

Americans, ehre is the lie in taht article:

FTA:"Protecting critical infrastructure like our power system must be a top priority," Cooper said at a news conference. "This kind of attack raises a new level of threat. We will be evaluating ways to work with our utility providers and our state and federal officials to make sure that we harden our infrastructure where necessary."

That is not a new threat whatsoever. it is exactly the damage that Gen Michael hayden used throughout the Bush adminsitration as an example, claiming that US police forces were stopping the attacks every single time they were planned, long ebfore the exectuion stage.

Cooper is lying. Directly lying. The attack was very obviously coordinated on social media - we've even seen some of the posts about it by people involved. It is very simple for the FBI and NSA to  crack this case. They had all the data while it was in planning stages. We know that, because that's the basis of US justifications for surveillance.

Cooper is also claiming it is "new" so that the attack is NOT labeled a terroist attack. Cooper is supporting the homophobic violence. Subby is correct that under the law, it was terrorism, but I hope nobody thinks that the article is calling it terrorism. The article is full of officials, who are actually in charge, reducing the criminal investigation to "shootings" rather than teorrism.

Send the full might of the military after these magats.  Have the military capture them, and have Biden execute them on the Whitehouse lawn. Isis style.  Make it be known that the ice cream has run out and so has Biden's patience.  Maga will no longer get the benefits of decades of appeals and lawyers.  They will be hunted down by the military.  And executed by the president.  Because we are at war.

I remember reading about looting at a local Wal Mart during this outage. Specifically the sporting goods/guns and ammo section. I know the anti LGBTQ /drag show angle gets clicks but I am willing to bet that this attack was a precursor to other violence. Targeted outage followed by smash and grab gun thefts to target more outages using stolen untraceable weapons.

Moore county isn't exactly NYC.   Outside of Pinehurst most of the towns down that way are just old whistle stops for CSX between Raleigh and Rockingham.  Whole lot of nothing but old sand hills until you hit Fayette'nam.

Although I do say if you're ever in Aberdeen, give Railhouse Brewery a look...good stuff, highly recommended.

The power company should be already prepared to service equipment failure, and if they're not, then that is a measure of the state's infrastructure resilience. And the importance of such measures and the safety plans required by those states.

Prepared for someone shooting up the place? Maybe not so much, but certainly they should be prepared for equipment failure and to fix it within hours. Sometimes those pesky regulations come in durned handy for setting up parameters and protocols for emergencies. Protocols are in place for a reason. And if you don't value them, then companies will ignore those protocols, because most of them require doing something that they don' wanna.

See Texas' brilliant regulations for power companies last winter. They complied with the law, and the weakness of the infrastructure plans was made manifest.

Biden specifically won't do this because he feels it's his job to "turn down the temperature" (of course, reading up on the success of that phrase used in similar circumstances...don't do it if you value sleeping) and remain calm as if nothing bad is happening, no terrorism or slaughter or plans for genocide because, according to the "turn down the temperature" tactic, noticing those things only makes everything worse.
