How to Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas

That's a very festive example of nominative determinism right there.

What I got from the article is that if I want to make sure I have "real" rum, I need to buy 1 of every brand in the store and get a mass spectrometer and other lab equipment.

That's a lot of work and money for just wanting to get my buzz on.

Cheap stuff because it gets mixed with juice, soda or some other mix.

FTFY

What kitchen couldn't use a good UPLC setup? It'd be more useful than sneaking samples of homebrew beer and mead onto the ethanol-quantifying GC at work, which I've watched my coworkers do despite there being much easier, lower-tech methods for that. Though come to think of it, that is a good way to check for methanol contamination. Huh.

A few tens of thousands of dollars isn't really THAT much investment to make sure you're only drinking the best, right?

I have a selection. I'm sure some of it is good. The Havana Club 7 is probably good.

It's certainly good when mixed with ginger beer.

My brother did similar research on whiskey when he was working at UC Davis.  Not so much useful for the individual who wants to know whether he's drinking the real stuff or not, but maybe useful in criminal investigation/prosecution of those doing the counterfeiting.

My first exposure to drinking rum straight was when my father-in-law gifted me a bottle of Ron Zacapa XO.  Have to admit that is pretty farking good stuff (but pricey)

I like Cruzan. It is relatively cheap in America because it's domestic, while still being authentically Caribbean. They distill it on St. Croix, USVA. The distillery tour is well worth the price of admission, because it ends in the free sample bar where they liquor you up before they sell you bottles even cheaper, packed up ready for travel.

Their Blackstrap Rum is dangerously easy to drink in shots when chilled.

It does the next morning. When you climb down the ladder of quality w/ each drink, you wake up in a deeper hole in Hell, w/ demons poking you in the eyes, temples, and stomach for hours and hours.

I've got a bottle of The Real McCoy and  a Kirk and Sweeney Reserva. Those I drink on the rocks. For mixing I have Monarch Gold.

I like this for making grog.  Doubt many are trying to fake this brand for some reason.

It actually is useful when determinging if something is counterfeit as the content of metals is different in both the drink in question and the metal foil used to seal the bottles.

In Brazil, back in the 1970s, people were counterfeiting Johnnie Walker as it was popular there at the time. Analysis of the foil caps showed that the real JW foil caps had a 0.056% antimony content and the fake ones had a 0.237% antimony content.

I keep Kraken around (as well as Bacardi Light and Captain) for mixing. I keep a couple higher grade for "sipping".

Kraken is somewhat recent for me. It has a flavor I'd like to use elsewhere. Like I want to try it in tiramisu, though that is a pretty high alcohol content for a dish that won't cook. So I'd have to be careful

At least you can prove it's "gunpowder proof" if you have some black powder around.

You owe it to yourself to get out the nutmeg grater and try a Painkiller. Cruzan Black Strap Rum is sometimes layered on top as a float, gives it a nice garnish/extra layer of flavor.

Might be the first tiramisu to get you drunk. Definitely adult only. Have to cut it a little with coffee

I'm a fan of Bacardi 8, good enough that I drink it neat, cheap enough that I don't mind using it as a mixer. I'm sure at some point I'll probably dive into rum more deeply like I have Scotch, Rye, Bourbon, Vodka, and Beer and I'll probably come to think of it as basic, but as a whiskey drinker I find its profile quite enjoyable at the moment.

Kraken or Sailor Jerry's. Wish I could get Redrum in the Midwest.
