If a deer's death is the price of me sending some important text messages, that's a cost I'm willing to mostly pass on to my car insurance company.

Around here, the damn deer wait until the car is on top of them before jumping out.

The wife had one run into the side of her Jeep...pulled deer hair out of the door hinge.

They are not the brightest of animals.

I thought the speed limit was around 35mph. Seems like you can avoid most deer and even then most severe accidents at that speed.

Drivers have gotten worse in the past two years. I see much less enforcement nowadays than previously. I don't know if new movies came out that glorified moronic driving, that also worsened the situation.

Slow 'er down there Turbo, when you're in deer country.

I don't know if it's just more deer - there are more bears and coyotes and perhaps even larger predators in Virginia nowadays.

Deer are suicidal mammals anytime they're near a road.

Exactly why I avoid rural roads at night...  two legged 'deer' in the city don't leave dents when they run out in front of you....

Yep - I'm gonna go out on a very sturdy limb here and guess that substantially more deer-involved crashes are the proximate fault of the deer, not the driver.  They are farking suicidal

Folks with high powered cars DGAS about speed limits.. that,s why they bought them.. do feel sorry for the deer, though.

Fark off with your nonsense. I had a perfectly good vehicle, was driving just under the limit, and totalled my car due to a deer jumping out. It happens.

I'm betting it's the farkin people from NOVA. They drive 100mph across 66 to get to Skyline Dr. Then they drive as fast as possible south on skyline to get to the end at 64. Then they drive 100mph to get home.  They're all driving with phones out, texting or taking selfies.  They are the deer killers!  They need to stay home, don't they know there are bugs and stuff out there.

But driving my "rugged" luxury suv 60mph on Skyline is the closest to taking it out in nature that i can do.

If a deer is way ahead and you still hit it, that's your fault for not paying proper attention. If it suddenly jumps out in front of you, just hit it. Swerving often ends you in a ditch, and slamming the brakes will often end the deer up through your windshield.

I am sure this has nothing to do with the white tailed deer population growth.

Bright eyes, burning like fire
Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?

Straight into the big noisy critter with bright eyes

/I'd guess the main problem is that they just can't judge a car's speed at all, honestly

I go to Thornton Gap all the time, usually before sunrise, so I can watch it from Mary's rock. The deer are an absolute nightmare. There are just far too many of them, and they aren't hunted (within the park grounds) and most of their natural predators are extinct or stay away from the populated areas. It's an overpopulation issue, combined with deer not being particularly bright creatures.

/best to drive slower, but that hasn't stopped me from having some near misses because they jumped out at the last minute.

Why not move the deer crossing signs to a stretch of road where the lighting is better!

park staff have installed "Deer Collision Area" signs along the most heavily used deer crossing areas on Skyline Drive.

Otherwise, you wouldn't know where to collide.

I grew up driving in the southeast, if you're on a country road and a deer jumps out in front of you it doesn't matter how slow you're going.  I've been hit by deer with my car stopped in broad daylight.

Deer run when spooked, they also try to keep up with their group so they absolutely will run right in front of a car or even into it.

Cars are now much more often trucks or SUVs, all of them are heavier and larger and have worse visibility than they did in 2000.

Maybe start actually putting hard limits on cars like after the first gas crisis, instead of encouraging it to get further out of hand with larger and larger vehicles.

We have plenty of suburban and urban (forest preserves) deer here and they understand the rules of the road.

Maybe the deer elsewhere are suicidial?

I've totally had one switch directions BACK in front of the car, multiple times. Their instincts do not serve them well against heavy fast things that are uninterested in them as prey.

Now I'm curious how many run right in front of trains.
