Why do I get the feeling that Colorado is going to regret this hire?

You're not bringing Louis from Jackson State, coach.

2022-12-05 4:05:08 PM
I'm not sure this is the way to win the team over. Presumably there will be players you want to keep.
Telling their friends/teammates to GTFO will possibly create some hard feelings.

FTFA:Colorado finished last in the Pac-12 in 2022 with a 1-8 conference record and a 1-11 season record, so Sanders doesn't seem very attached to the current squad.

I get what he's doing, things won't improve without big changes, and they need a lot of improvements.  But the whole "my son will be the quarterback" thing?  I don't know about that.

Who's going to teach tackling?

2022-12-05 4:23:21 PM
When Schiano came to Rutgers in 2000, he looked at the team and though to himself, "What a bunch of fatties." He admitted that the team was woefully out of shape and "pushed" some players to leave.

Colorado didn't become a doormat program by accident. Prime Team is just taking the same team that went 1-11 and telling them they won't help anyone win while they are here.

But yeah, the coach's son as the QB without question is kinda a d**k move.

2022-12-05 4:25:53 PM
The son was the starting QB for Jackson St for the last two years.   He's good, very good.  Likely better than anyone that Colorado could recruit.  It is nepotism, but the kid has skill.

The article conveniently fails to include the part of the intro presser where Sanders said his son would have to work for the starting QB job.  At this point, I don't think anyone cares what he wants to try - they barely won once against a 2-7 Cal Bears team and were absolutely shellacked in almost every other game.  If his son can ball in the Pac-12, so be it.

Totally agree with his assessment of the team. A better approach would be "hey, i'm just being up front. A lot changes probably need to be made and no one's roster spot is guaranteed. There will be new kids coming in to fight for those spots. If you feel like there might be a better situation somewhere else I understand. We wish everyone the best and appreciate all the hard work you've put in for this school"

It is much easier to tone it down after deliberately being meaner than anticipated than it is to be overly friendly and to set the line later. You might disagree but I'd counter that our backgrounds are likely to be very different. Pay attention to the message, ignore how it reached your ears. There is no 100% correct method when your audience is that large and people may be lost with it but you accept that because it will produce a net gain through addition by subtraction if nothing else.

I didn't play football, mind you, but as a general rule I'll vouch for that approach in other professional areas of life. Set that line the very first time you meet.

Is he a Michigan fan? Sure, if so, but I can't advocate for violence preemptively defending yourself in other cases because that would be unreasonable.

Aren't they supposed to be student athletes? Can he just  pull their scholarships? If so it's a pretty crappy thing to do. If not, his roster is going to be small.

I remember watching an NFL Films program back in the mid-80s or somewhere around there. They were talking about the Steelers. They talked about when Chuck Knoll was brought in. One of the players said Knoll had a team meeting and said, "I know exactly what is wrong with this team." The players waited for the revelation that would make them winners. "The problem is that you aren't very good players."

Chuck cleaned house and created a small dynasty.

Deion might be able to turn things around, but that is tougher to do in college ball.

If the best recruit (in the transfer portal era) is his own kid, he's not NEARLY the recruiter people think he is.

To be fair, he's only been the coach for one day.

Exactly. Stand before them, shoot the weakest looking one, and move on from there. Besides, punters are a dime a dozen at that level.

My sophomore year we got a new coach who had been a bit shiat and won a bunch of state championships at my school a decade before. When he had the team in to introduce himself he went on one of these rants to set the tone. At one point he said he "wanted guys with an S on their chest" at which point I leaned over to my buddy (who was the first kid in our grade to have a very hairy chest) and whispered "did he say a nest on their chest? Dude, you're golden!" causing both the two of us and a few others to chuckle. Coach lost his shiat and I don't think he ever truly forgave me.

Probably the same reason LaMelo Ball didnt play for Kentucky, Duke, or Kansas. Having an overbearing dad who pressures you to follow his career advice can be hard to overcome for a 17 year old kid.

Deion's kid might be good or he might be trash, but choosing to play for your Hall of Fame player turned college coach dad doesn't really prove it either way.
