(Lehigh Valley Live)   Judge announces retirement, can not say that he is running for DA, instead he says that he wants to continue his legal career and there is an election for DA next year so that is totally different   (lehighvalleylive.com) divider line

When I first read "Judge announces retirement," there was just the slightest glimmer of a thoughtful hope that it might, just maybe, have been Cannon because of her little bitty whoopsie.

So are those dudes in uniform cops or bailiffs?

If they're(see I can use the correct form, occasionally) cops I'm glad crime could take a break for them to go to a stupid press conference that could have been skipped

Biggest city in this county is 75,000 people. Is this really a national story? Or just an excuse for a clever Fark headline? (Which I would definitely understand.)

Campaign photos with on-duty police officers is totally ok though.

That would be an unusual demotion for a legal career. Usually, there is a 6 figure "Partnership" for retired judges.

He's doing it all wrong. The career path is supposed to go from public service to private, so you can rake in the dough thanks to all of the connections you made down at the courthouse. A DA or judge going to private firm can make a killing without having to do much of anything - just walk in, wave your hand in front of the entry-level attorneys who used to work for you, and you'll get charges dropped, sentences reduced, and a bunch of other 'perks' not available to other lawyers who weren't once insiders. That has huge value.

Going from judge to DA is a step backwards, tbh.

Not to be that guy, but RTFC: "Northampton County Judge Stephen G. Baratta, seen here at an event involving Central Booking at Northampton County Prison, is retiring at the end of the year, he confirmed." Sounds like it was maybe an opening of a new building. The guy hasn't said he was running for anything, so how could you have thought this was a campaign event?

I'm sorry Subby's apparently a career failure, but out here in the Professional World of Actual Adults we do manage to move between jobs & professional roles as well as between different organizations from government to industry and back & forth and between different parts within either without being corrupt shiatbags.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with a lawyer leaving a judgeship ahead of later running to be a DA while carefully coordinating the timing and their statements to avoid any conflict of interest. That's exactly what anyone would want from someone in either of those positions.

And why is this newsworthy, subby? People retire all of the time to take different, but related jobs.

No drawing a distinction between saying I'm going to run for DA next year and saying I'm going to do something like run for DA next year wink wink when the office is in for election

It's following the letter of the law while flaunting the spirit of the law

Then pretending that people have a problem with him wanting to change jobs not with violating the spirit of the law

I was more generally speaking to the habit of creating photo ops with uniformed officers in the background. He's not speaking to the officers. They are there for show. I have a hard time believing that presence of the media microphone on the podium and the stern faced officers standing in the background were not to communicate a political message. (I've had no success trying to find reporting on the original event.)

A sitting judge should understand how this image would raise questions about the impartiality of the legal system. I guess more accurately, a sitting judge should care how this image would raise questions about the impartiality of the legal system.

/ I don't think that judges should be hostile towards law enforcement
// and understand that they would need to work closely with court security
/// But the overt message here is that the judicial and executive branches are not separate
