The kid threw some big boy passes, but what the hell is with people naming their son Brock?  Do they have an autographed picture of Mitt Romney over their bed?

Apparently the most relevant Mr. Irrelevant so far is Ryan Succop.

Also, commence FA QB speculation.

Can we have just one sports thread where someone doesn't needlessly bring up politics? It's not like there isn't an entire tab where people can waste their typing skills on that.

And there  are a lot of undrafted free agents who have faired better than first rounders in the past.

If you look at the breakdown of active rosters in the NFL, it's really a league of first and second round draft picks, a few third, and a ton of UFAs.

It tells you a lot about the psychology of GMs. Burning a draft pick on the undersized kid from an FCS school might mean that Mel Kiper calls you out, but if that kid gets a camp invite, he might very well make the team over the "safe" pick of, say, a fifth round defensive lineman from a B1G program.

With Christian McCaffrey, the other offensive weapons, and that Defense, he just has to play like Phill Simms... no mistakes and they can win.

He's got a great set-up to make it work.

But, that's a LOT easier said than done.

I'm glad he got a chance and played well. Garappolo is done for the season, so he will get some more chances.

Something like 60% of all active players were drafted in the first three rounds, and 30% of them went in the first round.   What that says is rounds 4-7 are pretty meaningless.

The NFL should add three more teams and expand the draft to 11 rounds.  That way I might have a shot.

/ I am the player to be named later...

The "Mr. Irrelevant" term came from when the draft had 12 rounds and around 330 picks in the 70s.   Now the draft only has 7 rounds and 260-ish picks.   So, what is "Mr. Irrelevant" now was around 2/3 into the draft when the term was coined.

Something about unknown QBs coming off the bench and lighting it up. This has happened before, including recently for SF with Nick Mullens. It looks like defensive game plans are very QB-specific. They typically come back to earth once there's film, though.

This thread is depressingly devoid of free agent QB speculation.

I'll go first. Phillip Rivers.

The Pop Warner League that the Purdy's and my sons played together in is blowing up all the social medias with the news. Very cool to see not only one of the kids make it to the NFL, now he is starting.

This is not surprising to Cyclone fans

I had a feeling he was going to get some significant time this year.

He's a better option than Josh Johnson, who the Niners just picked up, if he's in even vague playing shape. Which he probably isn't.

Mullins never lit anything up. If he had, Purdy wouldn't be a 49er.

Absolutely but it'll never happen.

Mullens's first NFL game, 2018, week 9 vs. Oakland: 16-22, 262 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT, passer rating 151.9.

Three games later he went off for 414 yards against the Seahawks, 2 TD, 1 INT (passer rating "only" 95.3 - that metric is known to ding very hard for INTs).

He also had games of 332 and 282 yards, and his season low in that eight-game period was 221 yards.

Not sure "went off" is the description I'd use for a game they scored 16 points and lost by 27.

There's a lot of empty yards in all those losses. Aside from blowing out the Raiders, they were lucky to be in any of the games he played

As a Niners fan I'd say give Mayfield a call but that may not be a better option than sticking with who they already have.

Baker Mayfield was probably the best college QB I have ever seen play and his first few years in the NFL were decent enough.  I have no idea what happened to him, but there's a good QB in there somewhere and it would be criminal for the Niners not to give him a call given their circumstances

Agreed, his recent form has been pretty bad so I could either see it go well given how well the supporting cast and defense has performed this season thus far or it could be a complete shiatshow if his completion percentage doesn't improve and he commits a bunch of turnovers.

I was going to say, wasn't he in a bunch of national commercials as lately as last year? It seems like he's fallen pretty quickly.

Never mind, it's irrelevant.
