Pretentious dickwad says what?

It's a fun show, and Jenna Ortega is compelling in the part. The sets and cinematography are excellent. The only thing I can say against it is that it comes in the wake of a conga line of supernatural school dramas. But I say, fark all of those shows - this one is pretty bloody good.

I'd say it is honest.

I find the way the supernatural elements are presented to be pretty novel. Werewolves, vampires, other supernatural creatures, they unambiguously exist and it is just a matter of course without any in-universe surprise revelation. There doesn't seem to be any real "masquerade" where these elements are hidden from the townies so much as the townies are well aware and choose to just let the kids be.

Ortega does a great job of subtle facial acting and body language, she's a delight to watch.

And I could binge watch Christie and Ricci reading phonebooks, I don't care.

Ortega was perfectly cast. She looks and acts like Christina Ricci and Aubrey Plaza had a child together

Just like niche manga in Japan, welcome to Netflix's , "we have something for everyone!" niche programing business model.

They're looking to hook you on a show or two to get you in the store, so to speak, and having you end up buying (watching) some other things you didn't think you'd like.

Ortega is rightly praised. She's great in this, but I also want to praise Catherine Zeta-Jones, who makes a great Morticia. She has a lot of great subtle reactions. Like, when Wednesday finds out she going to be in the same dorm her mother was in (Ophelia House), and she says something like "Is she the one who committed suicide after being driven mad by her family?" And Zeta Jones just gets this twinkle in her eyes and a subtle smile.

They did a good job with the show overall, and as had been pointed out Ortega was great. But for me it didn't feel like an Addams show. It was missing all of the campy fun and none of the originals. And i love Luis Guzman but he played Gomez all wrong. Instead of a suave debonair rogue who was incredible passionate & caring, and a bit masochistic, we got a Disney well meaning but bumbling idiot.  And Gwendolyn Christie is always great, and started out fine, but I just spent every episode yelling at her to do something, anything, other than stand there. She also turned into a lazy trope.

I vastly prefer Raul Julia as Gomez, but I do have to say that Luis Guzman is closer to the original comic Gomez, which I think is what they were going for here:

Jenna Ortega has Christina Ricci's Wednesday look, mannerisms, and voice down pat, plus it's a nice bonus that Ricci is also in the show. As a huge Addams Family fan, I was doubtful of this show at first, but I like it.

She actually did a great job in the most recent Scream film because of the same talent. She has the ability to emote without overacting.

Yes, the show that did a bit over 3/5 the numbers of Squid Games is an unprecedented hit and will lead to the death of original programming.  That's logical.

The only problem with a second season of Wednesday is that it probably won't have Tim Burton behind the wheel and as we saw with Batman in the 90's when Burton left it was all down hill.

It's easier to tolerate Netflix's continually price gouging everytime some ransom "critic" clutches their pearls over the death of television.

I liked it a lot, but the main monster definitely needed better CGI.  That was rough, man.  Also, this is really pedantic and nitpicking, but "Goody" wasn't a name.  It was basically the Puritan equivalent of "Mrs."

Jesus McSordid: The sets and cinematography are excellent.

I especially liked the effect they had with the window.  I thought the "peeling the color filter off half the window" thing was a bit eyerolling at first, but it ended up being a really good look, and the first time Ortega and Myers had a serious discussion/argument in front of it, I realized exactly why they'd spent time on that sequence.

All of the reviews seem to agree that the show is well made but dull, which honestly, is basically the vibe I got from the trailers. But that's also sort of Netflix's thing. Decent production value, yawner scripts. That basically describes all their big hits. If it's cheap enough to make, you'll get a weird "this is clearly one person's artistic vision," like Russian Doll, but by and large: expensive and dull is Netflix's stock in trade.

I wouldn't call it dull. It's main fault is that it sometimes devolves into basically a CW teen soap. But it's got enough going on, and Ortega's performance is great enough, and it has enough great moments that it's worth a watch.

Gomez was never supposed to be suave. He thinks he's suave, but the only person that falls for it is Morticia.

Even going after the comic and to the TV show, John Astin, while not a bad looking guy, still portrayed him as this person most folks would cross the street to avoid talking to.

I watched the first 2 episodes... and mostly I was just bored. it was like an unfunny Goth version of Veronica Mars.
(at no point in either of the first two episodes did they even attempt to make a joke or setup a laugh.... this is based off a humorous comic...so that seems to be missing the point to me)

I've been thinking about trying to watch the rest of the series to see where it goes....but I honestly just don't care.

If I want an Addams Family fix I'll rewatch the original series or read the comic book.

That's a good assessment.  It does go there at times, which actually works okay as long as Wednesday visibly doesn't give a shiat about or react to it (and that contrast could definitely be played for comedic effect if they wanted to), but it does slump in some of those moments.  Other than that, though, it was a bold choice to give someone like Wednesday Addams actual character development, but like Shoresy, that gamble turned out to pay off really well.

They have a lot of characters to introduce and the first episode is dominated by the other Addams' who will only make one more appearance in the series. They also take the time to 'develop' the love triangle. The third episode develops the town's backstory a bit which is important. The main plotline doesn't really kick-in until the fourth episode.

I loved Dark, but 1899 just didn't grab me the same way, especially once things got so weird that there was only one way to explain it so the big twist about what was happening became kind of obvious. I'm just not sure how much they can do with exploring the next layer of the thing.
