Man, they went downhill in a big way. Back when my parents bought a TRS-80, that was a place run by electronics and ham radio nerds. Drawers full of components and a staff that could tell you what you should replace the one you de-soldered from the board with.
By the 80's it was "You've got questions, we've got blank stares".

Piedmont Airlines.  I used to fly (by myself from age 11-17) from Philadelphia PA to Norfolk VA and back where my dad lived. I got little wings and some other pins. I got to look in the cockpit before sitting down.  Free drinks and peanuts too. The flight was usually 45-50 minutes each way.
I always had to be dressed kind of nice and Norfolk had a policy where you couldn't meet passengers at the gate for arrivals /departures long before 2001, due to Norfolk having so many military personnel going through due to the  nearby bases. (At least that's what Dad told me.) Older teenage me fondly remembers sailors walking through the airport in those tight white pants. Good times.

Along those same lines I would add, Egghead Software and Software, Etc.

A lot of hours at my local Egghead Software playing PC games; it's where I first played "Sim City" and "Prince of Persia."

Here on The West Coast/Southwest we had Federated Group, which was an electronic store not unlike Best Buy. They had most of the video game consoles that were available in 1985 set up to play. I spent way too many hours playing Nintendo, Atari XE, Intellvision and computer games at my local Federated Group, which was just a few blocks from where I lived.

Federated Group also had memorable commercials by Shadow Stevens.

My mother in law worked at the Borders in White Flint Mall (now an empty lot) in the early 2000's and my kid used to go hang out there reading and attending their frequent story time events. It was a nice place.

Nice big medium-priced dept stores: Rich's, JB White's, Tapp's.

Good cafeterias. Why are they gone?

And especially the independent hardware store run by two guys who knew everything. And it was in bike riding distance from your house. And there was a dog asleep in the corner. And stuff for sale hanging from the ceiling.

Fishers Big Wheel. My dad used to call it Buckeye Mart because that's what the stores in our area used to be known as before they bought them out a year before I was born.

Unfortunately the place (and the entire plaza in the town we went to) is abandoned; they split that location into two stores, one a Family Dollar.

/The plaza pretty much died when KMart did.
//Now there's only a Taco Bell and a Super Wash operating; everything else has had for lease signs up for months.

I absolutely loved Gemco and it really saddened me when someone tried a hostile take over and they closed all of the stores to prevent that from happening.

Oh yeah, forgot about Pic & Save. I still have several things I bought there 40 odd years ago, namely a couple of leather cosmetic bags and some Christmas ornaments. I remember seeing a cute little children's turtle neck shirt there where the neck was too tight to get over any child's head. The Grants I worked for had gotten them in a shipment and we had returned them because of this problem. So they ended up at Pic & Save.

I don't miss Grant's. That was my first job and can't believe I worked there for 3 years. Started out at $1.65 an hour and when I left only made $1.85 an hour. They seemed to always pay girls and women less than they paid guys.

My best friend and I loved to stand in Service Merchandise and watch the products moving along the conveyor belts.

In my hometown, Sears had something akin to its' own post office. A customer could have mail ordered items shipped to that site and pick the items up there to avoid shipping charges. It was walking distance from our home.

FAO Schwarz used to be a small chain of toy stores, not just a brand name on items in other stores. It was crazy overpriced on toys that could be found in other stores, but it stocked toys that could NOT be found in other stores. It was those difficult to find items that made it a special place to visit.

Got my first bicycle at Otasco, Flying-O 20" with a banana seat. Broke my right arm a week later trying a jump.

There are still at least two old Otasco's still sporting the name, one in Beaver OK that actually sells tires, and the other in Marlow OK, a hardware store.

There's a Western Auto in Laverne OK.

Anyone remember this one (Vernon TX):

Republic Airlines was absorbed by Northwest Airlines  then Northwest Airlines was absorbed by Delta so theoretically  it still exists. Most defunct airlines still exist under a different name.

You want to hear a sucky story?  My wife's great aunt, a very close family member, just passed away last year.

Back when Kress was big, she was in charge of Women's Sportsware for the entire chain.  Now days, such a job would have you high up at corporate but back in those days, they didn't promote women.  And I'm not doing this justice - she basically had an executive level job but was not an executive unlike all the men in the exact same position as her (different departments).  She was the only "asst. Regional Manager" with that much responsibility.  And when she retired, she got a crappy pension (like $100 a month).

She was a very smart lady until the day she passed.  She never married after losing the love of her life in WWII (B17 crew member I believe).  Here's a pic of her on a wine bottle (winery owned by cousin in-law).

There used to be a 7/11 type chain called Leviccios (or something close to that).  They had subs that were cheap and very, very tasty.  7/11 bought them up in the early 80s.

Second Frys, in their prime they were awesome.

I lived in the building in the right of this photo (corner of Barnard and Broughton in Savannah, GA), in one of the apartments with the arched windows, above what is now a Banana Republic, but was at the time an appliance store, I believe.
