Drop bears in the glovebox are fine but heaven forbid someone wears a seatbelt slightly wrong.

Pretty sure any cop would pull your over for that garbage.

But remember; anything that is "just a fine" is really a tax on being poor.

Worn under the arm? I hope you like broken ribs.

Can I drive legally with a snuggy obscuring my correctly worn seatbelt?

I was ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt in a car that didn't have seat belts. Had to take that one to trial for the judge to acquit me because the prosecutor refused to dismiss it.

So he's responsible for his irresponsible passenger? In most places the driver has to make sure every child is buckled up, but that photo... didn't look very young...

Yep. You're the driver, you're responsible for every damn thing in/on the car. Passengers won't behave? Kick them out, or make them drive so the ticket is theirs.

Jesus Krist, a thousand bucks for a seatbelt fine? Why not add a year in jail too?

I got into an argument with my wife over this.  Her daughter (my stepdaughter) was being a biatch (she was 13, so that's normal) and took off her seatbelt just to "challenge authority".  So I pulled over and turned off the engine. I explained that I would be the one who got the ticket, so we weren't moving until everyone was properly buckled.  My (now ex) wife actually defended her daughter's actions.  I believe the only reason I won that argument was because it was a warm day and the car was starting to heat up.  My ex would have defended her daughter committing murder. Hell, she probably would have blamed me.

1000 dollary-doos isn't quite 700 US dollars. Also note that most western countries are far more serious about traffic violations than the US.

Agreed but, holy shiat, for a seatbelt violation? I don't think you get that much of a fine for driving over 100mph.

In the States? It varies by State of course, from about that much to well over and mandatory loss of licence.

And honestly it has to be high, like most fines, because if it's not most just shrug it off and pay it every time they're caught. Fines are high to dissuade the behaviour.

And someones going to come in here and say something like all fines are just money makers for the cops, come up with a better way then.

The public pays for injuries after accidents due to socialized medicine.  It makes sense to encourage those costs to be minimal.  In some Aussie states, your liability insurance is covered by the annual registration and no option to shop around for cheaper deals.  That means a 40 yr old driver with a perfect record pays the same as a 18yr old that just got their license.  They use license plate cameras in big box stores parking lots to find cars that haven't paid.

You get your car impounded for that, it's gonna cost well over a grand

That's weird. If the car was pre-1964 and originally came without belts the law is explicit. Only time you need belts is if children are riding in the car. Prosecutor should have been sanctioned for that. Cop should have been reprimanded for writing the ticket in the first place.

Where it gets weird is with the two-piece belts. My '72 Dart had them and I was never sure if I was required to wear it or not. Pain in the ass getting it folded up and stowed... I didn't wear it.

weird, here if you're over 15 the person not wearing the seatbelt gets the fine. Driver only gets the fine if they're an adult responsible for a minor.

Different laws for different states.  In California, a driver can be sited if a passenger under 16yo is not wearing a seat belt.  If the passenger is 16 or older, the citation goes to the passenger, not the driver

Because then it wouldn't disproportionately hit you harder the poorer you are?

The small town I used to live near had a moron for a cop. He ticketed a driver because the passenger was belted in the middle of the truck's bench instead of sitting where there was a three-point belt. Went to court and the cop lost. A couple weeks later, same truck same "problem". Another court date, ticket tossed. The judge told the cop he didn't ever want to see another "stupid stunt" like this.  So, the cop started ticketing people in the middle of the night in a school zone because "kids might be around".  He got fired and his name was sent around to other towns, so they wouldn't hire him. He moved not much later, probably to eastern Oregon where he had a better change of dealing with his peers.

I see your /s, but Australia hasn't banned guns, just AR's and most non-hunting guns. Also licencing and storage rules are strictly enforced.

Really simple way to not be affected by this

This isn't a tax everyone has to pay, it's a fine to discourage the behaviour. Don't engage in the behaviour and you don't have to worry.

Why is that sound logic to you? It's your boat you're responsible if someone flashes a little kid? You might not know depending on where they're seated. You might not be able to safely stop.

For working class Americans, an unexpected mandatory $700 expense could put them on the street. Maybe you haven't struggled in a few decades, but I promise that's an absolute sh*tload of money for a traffic ticket.

Gonna make a wild guess that thag money goes right into the municipal or police department's budget too

Here's the answer:  Fines - sure.  However, each state should pass a law that says all money generated by police or traffic fines go directly to a victim's relief fund with zero percent going to the municipality, police department, or state budgets.  The fines still deter the criminal activity, society benefits, victims are compensated, and police are not financially incentivized to fine people.  Also, make traffic cameras legal, but all fines are handled the same way, cameras must be fully owned by the municipality installing them and the installation/maintenance companies are not allowed to have any revenue sharing.

Basically, keep fines as a way to deter behavior, but take away any other incentives for cities/police to issue them.

It got so bad that my state reformed our driver license system to where your license and registration can no longer be suspended for unpaid traffic ticket fines, red light tickets, speed camera tickets, municipal tickets, or toll violations. All this means the cost of traffic infractions now dropped to $0 for everyone because the worst they can do is send it to collections where it eventually disappears.
