I wanted to like it. I just...wasn't having any fun after three hours or so, and had no interest in what little story there was.

The only souls-like games I really got into were Bloodborne and Nioh. I stopped playing them because I really wasn't getting anywhere. But, that is my opinion. If those types of games are your thing...you do what you like. Don't let anyone shiat on your game preferences.

I finished it with a magic build, somewhere in the low-mid 200s.

I didn't feel the need to do NG+ because they removed the incentive.

Other weapons and styles are fun, but I got the ending I wanted.

First souls game, 200+ hours on my first play through, finally at the Haligtree and still enjoying it. It can certainly be a frustrating experience at times but the exploration is so damn fun and rewarding. That said, whoever designed the Consecrated Snowfield stage can fark all the way off. That area just burns my eyes from having a screen full of white due to the storm/fog and cant see a damn thing for most of the area and it's just unnecessarily large. Other than that one area, great game so far.

Love that I can say something as innocuous as "I didn't find this game fun." and the response is "Hookay here's your vomit of UI icons and a can of Monster Energy, GameBro. Leave the real gaming to us real gamers."

I just found Elden Ring boring, and absolutely riddled with rookie-level shiat game design that every other company besides From gets rightfully raked over the coals about.

It's okay you found it boring. Not all games are for everybody but it is disingenuous to say it's filled with rookie-level shiat game design when the vagueness was the point. You're supposed to feel lost in a massive world you know little about and trying to piece things together.

I loved it because of the obtuseness. It took me back to playing Legend of Zelda for the first time and exploring where I was supposed to go and finding tools to over come challenges.

This had the same energy

As for the horse?

I got it in the first 30 mins by traveling to the sites of grace the game told me to follow. By the 10th death to Magrit /2 hour mark I realized I should go explore and level up. I think it's awesome we both had wildly different experiences, wish you had more fun with it though.

Small case in point: From's oh-so-clever-by-half approach to quest design had me skipping the entire combat part of the tutorial, and I wasn't the only one. You have two options: a well-lit doorway, or what looks like a bottomless cliff with a message on the floor that looks for all the world like some internet dorklord telling you to jump off a cliff (El Oh El). So I chose the door and had an absolute shiat time for half the time I actually played.

You can say all you want about how clever this was and bucking expectations and how it prepares the player for future blah blah bloopity blup-dub, but it's shiat design, objectively so. You designed your tutorial so "cleverly" that a portion of the player-base missed the "how to fight" part...in a Soulslike.

I get that they have this bizarre criticism-proof armor among gamers and reviewers but come on. This is bush league shiat.

Just because you don't enjoy something doesn't mean it's shiat design. I can't stand turn based combat, but I don't call a whole genre of games shiat because of it. They just aren't for me.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt and tried to have an honest discussion with you.

It seems you probably are some Mt. Dew chugging, COD rage slurring, simpleton if you need a UI and to help you figure things out. If your ego is so fragile that falling down a hole to see what's there and dying makes you feel bad on a personal level, then maybe you shouldn't play any video games.

No wonder you took such offense to just an image.

Or you're trolling, in that case the description stands.

Why? He can call it shiat design all he wants. Does that affect your enjoyment of the game? No

He can call it what ever he wants. Condensing opinions to simple terms like "It's shiat" is a major problem with  discussion in general. People have drifted away from being able to articulate their opinions and it's leading to hyper partisan tribalism.

The idea that things you enjoy are good and things you don't are bad, is childish, binary thinking.

They designed a tutorial that a good chunk of players missed. That's shiat design, sorry. If they had designed it properly, that article wouldn't have a reason to exist. And From agrees as well because they fixed it (or, as you farking tiresome dolts would put it "From caved to the whining of terrible players who need their hand held for everything. Sad.").

And thanks for showing exactly the kind of shiatty gatekeeping attitude that I'm talking about. Nobody can just not like the game, or have an actual valid criticism of it, it has to be because they're some smooth brained troglodyte barely capable of holding a controller and talking at the same time.

He's trolling. In other threads he was constantly whining about a quest log, which wouldn't have been noticeable if he didnt play the 30-45 minutes it takes to get the horse.

But I guess for some the big yellow arrows on the map pointing you to the critical path are rough.

I played for several hours. The first half of which was me wandering aimlessly, getting jumped by mobs, and gormlessly flailing my sword like a moron because I didn't learn how to parry or lock onto targets, again, because of the shiat way they designed their tutorial. This was my first Soulsey-Bourney so the whole "Oh yeah. From does stuff like that." wasn't known to me. None of the oh-so-obvious From-ness was known to me.

Accidentally killed General Radahn; thought the battle was a little too easy. Just kept my distance as far as possible, re-summoning only when necessary. Unfortunately didn't get to watch a lot of the battle as I was constantly running away. It only took 5 attempts and I'm only Lvl 75.

Yeah, I tried to stay in an easy area and farm stuff I could fight and level and up and it still never helped so I got bored and quit. That game is not fun. God of War has hard boss fights, but they are beatable after a couple of tries at most. Much less annoying to play for me.

You do understand that's a deliberate choice and that most of their games have been that way, right? The game not having something YOU want isn't an indictment of the developers, it just means it isn't to your taste.

I personally love the light-touch approach to storytelling and quests. Keeps it all out of the way and you only have to focus on it if you want to. Otherwise you can just keep pushing to the next site of grace and ignore all the rest.

DS2 was the first of their games I beat and I still couldn't be paid to tell anything more detailed than the broad strokes. Still had a great time with it.

My ADHD prevents me from being able to keep track of things from moment to moment while I'm in the process of doing them sometimes. Not having a quest log basically made the game unplayable. If that one dude who wondered how I played for hours without getting the goat-horse is reading, there's your answer. I just never knew what the fark I was supposed to be doing or where I was supposed to be going, so I just wandered around getting my ass kicked by angry lobsters and hands with fingers made of smaller hands and shiat. The map had weird yellow squiggles that looked like a bird took a dump on it. No explanation given for what those were or what they indicated. Real helpful stuff.

It's just not for me. Sucks that I can't get a refund or gift it to someone else, so I just chock it up to paying $60 to learn I'm not part of From's target audience, and likely will never be.

So why do you claim you were put off by the message telling you to jump off the ledge because you were afraid that a player was trolling you?

I mean, I get it if games aren't for you but jumping in every related thread and whining about a game you didn't like seems pathological.

Just a theory bear with me...

A lot of modern games do everything guide players so they get the "good brain chemicals" and are more likely to spend money on loot boxes or pointless reskins/mounts/etc. Adding in toxic players that equate any death = failure = unacceptable = deserving of ridicule, you get a recipe for a lot of people to actually feel hurt when they make a simple mistake or can't master something with minimal effort.

That's why if they don't like something then it MUST be a problem with the game and not their inexperience. Therefor game = shiat / bad. It's a simple defense mechanism we all have. Got way to drunk on Tequila multiple times? Your brain will file it away as BAD DO NOT DRINK! and you'll gag when you smell it.

If Xalres isn't trolling, then it's probably some form of that. His ego needs positive reinforcement that it's not him being bad at a video game, it's shiat design and needs others to validate his views.Like that tribalism I mentioned earlier.

It's why he turns me saying "it's okay you found it boring" is some view of gate keeping. It's why there must be some conspiracy of critics feeling smug and superior to him because they LIKED the thing he didn't enjoy.

It's childish thinking. And it's bleeding into all aspects of modern society.
FFS tt's all over Fark entertainment threads for shows and music acts that aren't main stream, boomer, male dominated.

In regards to Fromsoft games, a lot of players can not get used to a game where dying is pretty much a core mechanic and not a real punishment you can't recoop with minimal amount of time or improvement. Because dying = bad = they deserve ridicule.

This isn't me feeling superior or above Xal. I've been there many times as a teen but I learned and grew as a player / person. The Mt. Dew, simpleton comment was just in response to what I perceived as a troll. (and still 90% sure he is)

xalres: I played for several hours. The first half of which was me wandering aimlessly, getting jumped by mobs, and gormlessly flailing my sword like a moron

That's exactly how I felt playing The Legend of Zelda for the fist time at like 7 years old and I thought it was a blast because I didn't have preconceived notions that failing at a game is a personal attack.

It took actual years of going back and trying again before I could beat it. I find that type of gameplay fun.

It's okay if you don't.

But to say Fromsoft is shiat design, you might as well put Miyamoto down in that cesspit of bad design too.

I'm participating in a thread about a dude who didn't finish the game. Fark me for thinking I could relay my experience with the exact subject the thread is about.

Hopefully we all come to forums for discussion on topics we enjoy. There is absolutely space for you and your opinions. There is no shame is saying you found it confusing or frustrating. Blaming the design of a team that put care and love into a beautiful world that many find inspiring makes you come off as a philistinel.

Like I said before, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just don't express yourself well and have issues from past attacks from toxic Fromsoft fans.

Hopefully my verbose walls o' text didn't turn you off of sharing your opinions.
