Most casino games give much better odds. People might be realizing that.

The poker room at MGM Springfield has a good NFL promo going: they give out a few hundred dollars, spread among the players at one random table upon every score during the game. Thursday night, an hour before the (Patriots-Bills) game, I signed up for $1/$2 and popped up 39th on the waiting list. I checked again when the game started an hour later and was 35th. Couldn't get on a table that night.

I see them sitting at convenience stores.  They go in, buy a handful, go back to their car, scratch them, go back in, buy more with the few dollars they win, scratch those, buy more with less that they win, scratch those, LOSE and drive off.  Usually with a couple kids that look like they haven't had clean clothes or a bath in a month.

Weah's my scratchah?
I hate to go off track on a good gambling thread, but we maybe could turn this around if everyone began insisting on pre-pandemic roll-back pricing.  "If it costs extra, I ain't going to buy it."  That's what I'm doing, but so far it hasn't had much in the way of results.

At this time, there should be a minimum wage at $25/hour, a maximum wage which won't exceed 20x the minimum wage (so the corresponding maximum wage would be $500/hour), and a monthly guaranteed income equivalent to the minimum wage. And all these things would be periodically adjusted according to productivity.

Well sports gambling just went live here a week ago so all the sports gambling companies are pushing their apps. You know maybe if there was a decent tax system that taxed people with money states might not need lotteries.

Uneducated are dying, young people are getting smarter, thus less lottery ticket buyers. Not to say I won't buy a powerball every now and then. I think 12 bucks was my max win, but it's fun to dream sometimes.

Keno and scratch tickets aren't choices.  The old fat poor smoking lifers sit at tables and bars and loiter at convenience stores for them.  Sales aren't down because of a change of heart.  They're down because those people are the Corona's target audience.

I get the people that play like, the regular 3x/week lottery or Powerball or whatever. I mean, it's a bad deal, and it preys on those that usually have least to spend on it, but at least it's like a few bucks and they dream of winning millions.

But since I was a kid the lotto has gone from that to having like, a kajillion drawings and I think, who plays these? Where I live in addition to the regular few times a week big prize drawing there's a daily pick 5, a twice daily pick 3, and I think maybe a pick 4 drawing? And another one twice a week that offers line $10,000 a year for life or something to winners? I can't even remember all the random daily drawings. I've never met a single person that has bought a ticket for those, but SOMEBODY must be because if they were losing money they wouldn't do it.

The math on most lotteries is awful. They take about half of the wagers and then it's taxed. It's like paying $1 to flip a coin and only getting $1.30 if you get heads.

Ages ago, a math professor at UN Reno explained the basics to my college engineering club during a student conference. The Nevada Gaming Board would audit slot machines and other games; their legal limit, the worst payout any game in Nevada casinos was allowed to have, was 36/38. That's a double zero roulette wheel (38 numbers) but it only paid out $36 for a $1 bet. Tribal casinos and state lotteries, obviously, don't have that restriction.

As a Mass resident, I can tell you that there is no shortage of people paying the Stupid Tax. I just want a soda and a bag of chips and I got old people ahead of me in line rattling off numbers like Big Smoke in the drive thru. If you didn't spend half your Social Security check on tickets that won't even let you break even, you'd have money for actual hobbies!
