"Intangibles" are what ESPN pundits and bad NFL GMs talk about just before drafting in the first round a QB who will later appear on All-Time Greatest Busts lists.

Just FYI.

"I can't come up with any sane measure of why I am hyping the blind, deaf, and dumb parapelegic with no higher brain functions, so we'll call it 'intangibles' and now you are the bad guy for questioning my analysis".

Right up there with the "unwritten rules of baseball", which just means "I want to assault that guy and he's not doing anything wrong, but now everyone has to congratulate me for splitting his skull wide open in front of God and everybody"

as a Steelers fan - I like Pickett. not sure if I agreed with starting him this early in his career, but he's starting to play better and you can see the game is starting to slow down for him a bit.

but I'm not putting him in the Hall of Fame just yet. right now I'd be happy with a .500 record

/and fire Matt Canada

This. Not everyone is Mahomes out of the gate.

I was half expecting this to be some spittle-flecked nonsense from Mark Madden.

I'm also on the "Pickett seems like he might actually be decent, let's see how he develops before going overboard" train.

I'd only heard Doug Whaley on the radio and I thought he was probably a balding middle aged white guy. Was surpassed to find out he's.... well not that

Also, let's get Kenny's TD/Int ratio in the positive range before we collectively start sucking him off. He's making progress but he's still severely underwater in that regard

How much did Doug Whaley drink before making that statement comparing Pickett to Montana?

Pickett is getting better as a QB with his decision making and he had a good game against the Colts. If he continues to make good decisions as a QB, he can get a solid QB. Maybe not the most flashy one, but a dependable one who knows when to throw, when to run, and when to hand it over to someone else for the win.

Cowher was a better coach than Tomlin, at least he could win without a qb

Tomlin went 8-6 with Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges

Also, Neil O' Donnell was a good QB for the era. Better than any non-Roethisbeger Steelers QB since Bradshaw

Just as long as he's not the next Ryan Leaf.

I'm sure he'd look much better if he actually had more than a rookie and butterfingers McGee (aka Diontae Johnson) to throw it to.  And I'm sure he'd look much better if he didn't have Matt "I have no idea how to run an offense" Canada as OC.  And I'm sure he'd look much better if we didn't have Dan "Im barely better than having that space be air" Moore Jr trying to block for him.

I honestly feel bad for him getting thrown into that situation.  He's doing an admirable job in spite of those circumstances.

So to his detractors... that's why he doesn't look great.
To people who think he's the second coming of Jesus... wtf are you watching?

He's a rookie.  He's getting much much better as the season goes along.  Hopefully we can shore up the OL and get him another weapon to throw it to.  And hopefully someone can talk some sense into Mike Tomlin to fire Matt Canada.

Multiple winning seasons with Tommy Maddox/Stewart/Tomczak , Tomlin's still at 500 without Ben

Whaley has been right about quarterbacks before.  He was the Bills GM just after the hired McDermott as coach.  With the 10th pick he wanted to take Mahomes, McDermott wanted to trade the pick to KC. McDermott won, Whaley was fired shortly thereafter.

Rothlisberger was lacklustres in his rookie year. He averaged less than 200 yards per game passing and through 11 interceptions against 17 touchdowns. Not a great ratio.

It wasn't until his sixth year that he became a legitimate passing threat.

So far, Pickett has shown some promise. He threw seven ints in his first four games but, in his last four, he's thrown one. He's learning and adapting. He also has Pickens as a young receiver who's showing promise.

Now, if only the Steelers could do something about that offensive line.

he might be the next Terry Bradshaw, if they can put a great team around him.   Hell, he may even be the next Joe Flacco.

That's why they should have used the draft to solidify. Let Trubisky play and draft a QB this year.

But they didn't, so go Pickett. He looks okay so far. I think he'll be solid but probably not spectacular

Bellichick less than 500 without Brady. And "without Ben" in Tomlin's time has meant playing with backups not starters (until this year).

On top of all that, Cowher never won with a franchise QB on a 2nd (or subsequent) contract. So he was typically playing with a top 3 D and a top 5 o line

Plus, it felt like Cowher was losing the AFC Championship Game every year at home.
Granted, he was getting to a lot of AFCCGs to lose them...

Ironically, or not, also a Pittsburgh area guy. Good old Beaver Falls. Home to Joe Namath and the setting for Mr. Belvedere.

Not sure what you think they were supposed to do, they don't have a real QB, so starting him is better than the other options.

Besides, if you never start, then you just end up getting shuttled around as a backup QB.

Exactly... Kind of silly to paint him as THE answer when he's just barely starting to get his feet under him. Looks good so far, fingers crossed.

Hey remember when everybody thought Montana was the best but then his backup won a Super Bowl after he left and it turned out Joe Walsh was taping teams practices and then Montana went to KC and was average so everybody now knows he was just a system/cheating guy?  Remember that?

I sure as he'll do NOT remember singer Joe Walsh having anything to do with the NFL. And if you think that Steve Young winning a Superbowl means Joe Montana wasn't great, then you don't understand the NFL. Or the world.
