As popular as it became to hate on Metallica, post-Napster, it was as popular to be on their jock before hand. I had never really heard them save a few songs on MTV before their tour with GnR and Faith No More. The one where Rose melted down constantly. I had never really heard either Faith or Metallica but walked out hating GnR (Rose walked out on the Giants stadium show I was at) and a fan of Faith and Metallica. Also, I saw my first in person boobs at that show.

I've had my ups and downs with them.

Master of Puppets was in my car cassette player around 75% of the time during my senior year of high school. They came to Hartford for St. Patrick's day on their And Justice for All tour and stunk out the joint. I remember puking up green beer and spaghetti more than I remember any of their numbers.

Still, they did their part to kill Hair Metal along with Guns and Roses and Grunge, and I thought the Black Album was inspired.

I stopped paying attention to them after that. Not their fault. I'd fallen in with Jane's Addiction and Alice in Chains and Ministry and the like.

Pretty good read.
Yes, they are fronted by 2 major alpha assholes, but their (earlier) music has hurt me and shaped me and saved me... it's kinda hard to explain.
Good on James for getting clean and continuously working on his sobriety. What he says about it ITFA strikes several chords with me.

How to play like Metallica:

1. Beat off, a lot, with your strumming hand. No, more. Nope, still more. You should be able to get 1500 strokes/sec. (This will also provide you the endorphin rush you need to feed your ego, and you will never notice that your lyrics are increasingly shiatty.)

2. Get comfortable in Phrygian and Locrian modes. Forget everything else.

3. WAH WAH EVERYTHING

4. Get a metronome, and set it to click on the half-beat between the 4 and the 1. Now you don't even need a drummer!

Where I saw them
They played a few from Master of Puppets

Guess it wasn't cool enough to be 3rd on the bill behind The Scorpions and Van Halen

Still, they were above Dokken

I only like bands you've never heard of and when you finally hear of them they have sold out and suck now. If a band plays to more than 250 people at a concert they aren't elite enough for me to consider good.

To be fair, if you're used to seeing a band in small venues with cheap tickets it can be hard to drum up much enthusiasm to pay 10 times as much for a far worse stadium experience. I generally quit seeing bands live once they pass a certain threshold, not because I think THEY suck, but because big shows suck.

I don't know if it was genius, or just being in the right place at the right time, but love them or hate them, Metallica did what no others in their genre of music did. Other metal bands of their time may be "better," but when it comes to name recognition, Metallica has Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth... all of them, solidly beat.

/Was a big time Metallica fan
//stopped listening before the black album, just lost interest
///also loved Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth

I like them. There I said it. From Ride the Lightning thru the Black album are probably my favorites. I saw them on the Ride tour when they opened for WASP I think.  did not like WASP. All of my friends wanted to see them.
Saw them on Master of puppets, then monsters of rock with Van Halen at RFK, and finally with GNR.

After the black album there are only a few that I listen to though. Load and Reload are ok and have some songs I like. I listen to Death Magnetic a lot. St. Anger and Hardwired- not a fan and have only listened to a few of the live tracks. I did listen to most of the concerts they did on Metallica Mondays during covid.

Fave songs- Damage, Disposable Heroes, Orion, Call of K, Justice, Shortest straw, Harvester, Cyanide

check ebay. I recently got a DVD of PCU for like $11 including shipping.

re: Metalica... was running errands yesterday and their new song came on, and once again... the lyrics are basically repeating the same "I got these from a $2 rhyming dictionary"  multiple times

its right up there with "shiat out of luck, hardwired to self desctruct"....

Hetfield...you are over 50 dude... not EVERY lyric HAS to RHYME.

how the fark did we get from

"Breadfan
Open up your mind
Open up your purse
Open up your vault
Never, never gonna lose it
Breadfan
Take it all away
Never give an inch
Gotta make a mint
Gotta make me a million
Breadfan
You got it wrong
Some long time friend's gonna lose it
In the end who's a fool
Seagull
Give it all away
Stay a bird
Stay a man
Stay a ghost
Stay what you wanna be
"

to the sheer laziness of cramming together a bunch of words that all end in the same suffix and calling it a day?

"Exhilaration
Frenzied sensation
Kindred alliance connected inside
Commiseration
Sonic salvation
Cast out the demons that strangle your life"

/PS. it wasn't "Napster" ...it begain with the "black album"  and kicked into high gear on the pure shiat highway with the garbage the was "Load" and they've never looked back.
they turned to shiat years before Napster was even a thing.
