Pass it through the Senate, so Republicans are forced to vote on it in the House.  Make them go on record.

Therion: Trump cancelled student debt? For who? Barron?

Repayments were suspended due to COVID, is that what she's talking about?  That's not cancelling debt, just extending it

Yep. We've established that legal and judicial precedent, and even the farking Constitution (particularly the 9th and 14th Amendments, but really any part that isn't a bastardized version of the 2nd Amendment, are irrelevant to this SCOTUS.

If the republicans lose these court battles and Biden is legally able to forgive student debt he should immediately at minimum double the forgiveness. He should put his thumb right in their eye for this bullshiat.

Yes, promising to help the people and the overall economy (less debt = more money to spend = money circulates = economy grows), then actually doing those things, is how politics are supposed to work.

So you like people being saddled with debt when they seek to better themselves. Enjoy your feudal existence. I'm sure you imagine yourself to be the landed gentry in this scenario.

he should transfer all the debt to republicans in the form of StudentLoanCoins and they can HODL it on an exchange to trade to each other until it crashes to zero which then truly wipes everything out.

You have a point. The more the GOP hurts people, the more fervently their voters turn out to elect them.

Dear Liz, Obama forgave student loan debt for people WHO WERE DEFRAUDED.  Those people did not a get legit education and deserved to have their debt wiped clean.

For everyone else, it's very illegal to forgive it.

/It's a give-away to buy votes, that's it.  Which is fine.  Buying votes is how you win.  But choose something legal and more popular next time.  A trillion dollar giveaway to deadbeats is not the winning issue you think it is.

When are all the PPP loans that were forgiven going to be repaid, then?

Unlike Republicans' favored bailouts (which go straight to stock buybacks and executives' offshore accounts), bailouts for poorer people go back into the economy. Social programs that boil down to just 'give money to poor people' pretty much universally turn a profit for the government, because poorer people farking spend it on goods and services.

More money being spent at more businesses for more things is better for the economy than throwing money at people who already have more money than they could spend in several lifetimes of luxury while everyone else suffers.

Then this should be retroactive back to when the constitution was signed.
That will help more people and the economy even more.
For those who have passed on, the money goes to their descendants.

Oh even if the Supreme Court, along partisan lines, kills his proposal I'm not peeved at Biden about it.

Also, the tool they set up for the applications was *incredible*, and I mean this sincerely. Simple. Easy. No digging up shiat tons of info and tracking down who your original loan borrower was or when you applied or any of that. It was Name, Birthdate, Social Security number, and... current address, I think?

And that was farking IT.  It was a fantastic example of how efficient the government can actually be!

It is quite possible that this move by Senator Elizabeth Warren is just what she needs to get into the Oval Office in 2024 or 2028 as this will do a lot to add the "People owe me because I exist" crowd to her base which have always shunned her in the past.

If there hadn't been a decade plus of disinvestment in higher education many wouldn't have the higher loans they have right now.

Like anything else in life, if you defer addressing a problem until much later it usually costs much more than if you had fixed it in the first place.

People objecting to indentured servitude via debts that are designed to be hard, if not impossible, to pay off with any speed are totally just entitled and lazy don'tcha know. Bet they got one of those "liberal" degrees that are arbitrarily declared worthless because we can't have a society that values things like art, history, or sociology.

At the very least, it pisses off the, "If it doesn't benefit me personally, I'm against it" crowd.

All the more reason we should be fixing the entire loan system rather than applying a short term bandaid and handout to wealthy white people. A giveaway might be great for buying votes in the short term but in ten years we'll have another decade's worth of kids signing on to the same predatory loan terms who will need a bailout again.

Why couldn't this be part of the discussion when we had both the House and Senate? What a waste of two years.

Right now a big reason I haven't consulted a divorce lawyer is that my more-successful-when-measured-by-money husband has stock options vesting the year the kid starts college to the tune of a years tuition each year.

I graduated debt free, thanks to wealthy family, and it let me pursue work in the field I thought I wanted (I was 22, I was stupid, but I was not in debt). I wish the same for all, and if loan forgiveness helps get us there, that's what we should do now.

Going forward we should get back to free /low-cost college.
