It might not be as flashy as our match with England, but there certainly is a lot of history between the United States and Netherlands. Why, the area I live in was originally a Dutch colony. Heck, even old New York was once New Amsterdam.

Supposedly the entire Dutch team is dealing with a flu outbreak, so that might help.

I can't stay. People just liked it better that way.

This Netherlands team is basically the England team that the USMNT faced in Group B, just in a fetching shade of Oranje.

If the US play like they did in that game (except maybe don't aim a dozen corners at van Dijk's head) they have a shot at winning, or at least taking the match into extra time/penalties.

I get Fox OtA, but I'm not sure I can take this level of homer coverage.. off to the TSN app.

I just hope both teams have fun.  Until later, then I hope Argentina are absolutely farken miserable.  Sorry, guys, it's just that you're in the way of the mighty Socceroos.

The day is upon us! Really wishing a stop at the Biergarten could have happened but a newborn changes those plans pretty quickly. The US defense has been great. Like mentioned above, if they can improve the quality of all the shots they're getting I could see them advancing.

USA 2, Netherlands 1. The winning goal comes in the second 15 minute period of OT.

As a fan of a non-SEC (American) football team, having to watch ESPN each week has taught me how to tune out needless knob slobbering.

Hence names such as Harlem, originally Haarlem and named for a Dutch city Also why so many towns and rivers around New York end in "-kill", which comes from the Middle Dutch work kille meaning "creek".

I think I'm going to have to watch the Spanish language coverage of this game even though my Spanish is minimal. The Fox coverage is going to be even worse than the England game.

BTW, I don't know any England fans who thought of that game as anything more than just another mid-level opponent we should have beaten.

It won't happen, but the Round of 16 results that I'd most like to see:
Netherlands vs USA.
Argentina vs Australia
Japan
vs Croatia
Brazil vs. Worst Korea
England
vs Senegal
France vs Poland
Morocco
vs Spain
Portugal vs Switzerland

From the BBC liveblog. Wait until Ali finds out that the USA has to play the entire Netherlands.

Seems the illness outbreak isn't just confined to the Dutch camp, sounds like Senegal's managed has been ill with it for a few days now.

Elsewhere Brazil have more injury headaches to deal with after chosen to throw their reserves into the Cameroon game. Both Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles are out with injuries that won't recover in time to play again, and while Neymar still isn't fit they're keeping him around even though he might not get another game because they feel they need him in the camp.

And in other news, it's being reported that Pele's 'routine' trip to hospital has turned into palliative care, seems like his cancer has progressed to a point where recovery won't be possible.

USMNT gotta put pressure on the Dutch midfield and don't allow them to settle in and take control of the game.
Make your set pieces count. This is one of those games a contender like Brazil or France might win 1-0 on a corner header.
