(The Age (Melbourne))   EU spent $500,000 to throw a party in the Metaverse. Which I'm sure was appreciated by the 6 people who showed up   (theage.com.au) divider line

I'm sure they can make that back with a few quick GDPR fines

But a correspondent for international development website Devex exposed the disappointing turnout. "I'm here at the 'gala' concert in the EU foreign aid department's metaverse. After initial bemused chats with the roughly five other humans who showed up, I am alone," Vince Chadwick posted online.

That's one. How many of the other five people were also journalists covering the event as a part of their work duties?

You'd think there's be at least one staffer at the EU that would be able to tell the higher-ups that absolutely nobody gives a shiat about the metaverse.

It's kind of weird to see Second Life get a second life.

And eventually a second death.

Stop trying to make the metaverse happen

Imagine thinking "Surely people will be interested in in-depth policy discussions in the Metaverse!"

This need a completely different Oof Size scale meme, here we go:

If their goal was to engage young people, they should have paid off Korone and David Hayter to turn up on Twitch to Amogus and point fingers about IMPORTANT POLICIES disguised as CRINGE MEMES.

Maybe the attendees were confused and thought it was a rally to support Kari Lake?

We Ate the Necco Wafers: It's kind of weird to see Second Life get a second life.

Second Life is still around. It doesn't get any press, which is a bit of a shame as it shows that everything that Zuckerberg wants to do in order to justify the use of planet-killing crypto and NFTs can be and has been done for years perfectly well without them.

Which brings me to one of the major issues with crypto and NFTs. There isn't a single use for them that can't be done faster, cheaper and with far less use of resources without them. As a result the entire crypto market is based purely upon speculation that it will one day have a practical use. As this still hasn't even been hinted at yet it should come as no surprise that that speculative bubble is collapsing at a hilarious rate.

I wasted 5 years of my 20's playing the FFXI MMORPG on PS2.  That game looks 10x better than the Metaverse I've seen so far.  How can billions of dollars invested just look so terrible in 2022?  Even the Miiverse or whatever can point their finger and laugh at it.

...Making it a resounding success, since the majority of metaverse users stopped by?

Maybe I'm not "hip" or "with it", but when I hear about THE METAVERSE, no one ever actually says what it is, or where it is. It would be like talking about Youtube or Facebook without mentioning that they are websites and using vague words that mean nothing.

I accept that I am not in their target demographic, but what the fark is the metaverse? Is it a thing, or just a concept? Or what?

It's basically Second Life, with shiattier graphics.

/and a way for Zuckerberg to swindle investors who like buzzwords

It's what Facebook is, but you have to spend $2000 on VR hardware to access it, and it all looks like you've been trapped inside the original Wii GUI, and have to do facebook-type things there, but instead of being able to read other folks inane LOLCOMMENTS, you have to listen to them.

The Blackjack & Hookers was just a myth.

Have you ever seen apps like Second Life? Those virtual reality chat apps where you just walk around a virtual world and talk to people? The 'METAVERSE' is just Facebook's marketing term for their knock off version of VR chat that uses FB's VR goggles but for some reason Zuckerberg is convinced this is the next big thing even though this stuff has been around for decades.

Do you remember when Zuckerbot bought Occulus? And it's cost proportional to FB at that time?

"It's a travesty that an EU institution feels the need to throw hundreds of thousands of euros behind this nonsense," Jacob Kirkegaard of the German Marshall Fund said. "Anyone with a brain knows the metaverse is a dud."
Responding to the criticism, an EU spokesman admitted: "The metaverse is not meeting our expectations. In its current state, its user interface is not user-friendly and appealing enough."

"...and it's been like that for at least the last two decades, so we're not really sure what we expected, to be honest" is how that should've ended.

It's because 90% of the people who talk about it don't actually use it (for lack of the hardware or any serious desire to) and 90% of the people who use it don't actually talk about it.

As for what it is: take an open world MMORPG, and then remove all the quests, all the combat mechanics, all the NPCs, most of the graphics, and leave the player with nothing much to do except buy digital merch and talk to other players in the lobby. Only the ONLY way you can access it is in virtual reality. Which is better because reasons.

If you had to define it at all, it would be "immersive virtual world." If you had to DESCRIBE it at all, you would fail, because there's nothing much in it.

All of our techno-billionaires read Gibson'a and Stephenson's  cyberpunk books where there was virtual reality and artificial worlds and took away the wrong lessons.  First, all of them are about the little guy escaping the megacorps via VR because an avatar can be anywhere flipping the bird to the man and helping those they love.  The Zuckerbergs and Musks have become the villains their heroes were fighting.

Second, Hiro Protagonist (Stephenson's Snow Crash)  and Angela Mitchel existed as stars in the virtual worlds because those worlds were worth visiting.  Until they can offer someone a place where an avatar can move, act, and emote like someone in real life, people aren't going to waste their time visiting the metaverse when they can have better, more meaningful virtual interactions, using web cams playing Call of Duty.  Their audience wants "The Peripheral" and they are offering an AOL lobby with graphics..
