Yeah, I'm sure people are watching this only because there are sharks in it.  I'm sure if there were naked people swimming with the sea urchins nobody would watch.

Sometimes scientists are dumb about people.

Fark shark week. It's a crap series and has been from the get-go. And fark Discovery Channel and all its brethren.

On the one hand... people getting their science from "Naked and Afraid of Sharks" (or its sequel) are idiots, and it seems like quite a waste of time from people taking it way to seriously to scientifically review over 200 episodes of Shark Week.

On the other hand, it should be illegal to film people and misrepresent them so heavily as they do in Shark Week. You shouldn't be allowed to pose a show as a documentary and then turn it into a race to find a Voodoo Shark.

I'm a little more torn about the "diversity" problem. If your audience wouldn't listen to translated Spanish or Afrikaans or such, I don't think it's absurd to interview a native English speaker who is an expert from elsewhere as opposed to a local expert.

But also if people won't watch because there's a black guy or a female scientist being interviewed... this is a problem

It's also a problem if it's just the producers or executives who only want white male experts.

Not sure why race is necessary here. Oh, and 'Michael was the #1 boys' name from 1954-1998, with the exception of 1960, when it dipped to #2, so it's kind of expected that the name "Mike" would be there a lot.

Never once watched Shark Week, and I agree about Discovery channel. Back in the day it sucked because they would have a show with a ton of commercials, then lead out for every commercial by telling you what they are going to cover after the commercial, as well as then giving you a recap when they came back. I once timed everything, and after taking out redundancy and commercials, a 1 hour show had something like 18 minutes' worth of actual unique content. It was basically like a web version of the Daily Mail.

Crazy that it somehow got WORSE, isn't it? I don't even watch those channels anymore, occasionally the Smithsonian channel, but the other shiat just turned into Reality TV Central.
