Sounds like anxious, first-time parents hearing something minor and then freaking out and thinking it's the end of the world.

Get him a "That Kid" T-shirt and walk around with him wearing an "It's not all bad, my other kid is the IT GIRL!"

Trust me, veiled Clara Bow references are due for a comeback.

We expect far too much of five year olds. Sit still, don't make noise, pay attention to this boring assed shiat. Blah blah. Then we wonder why they act out.

I got a referral for my kid when he was 18 months old for occupational therapy because he was missing some milestones. The assessment form said the therapist's goal was for him to sit still and do an activity for 3 minutes without redirection, with the baseline during the assessment being three redirections in 20 seconds.

He's more focused now (3 months later), but even then he could still sit and do one thing for five or ten minutes if he were interested in it. In a new room full of toys with a stranger? Forget about it.

Reminds me of the old adage - "everyone is normal until you get to know them."

If you don't understand that point, you are liable to constantly overreact and assume your kid is some extreme (either good or bad) compared to the "normal" kids in school. Guess what, they all have their foibles.

My 5-year-old had a fairly smooth transition to kindergarten after only limited preschool experiences (a half-day, 3-day-a-week outdoor nature school)

Gee, when I started kindergarten it was the first time I had done anything without at least one parent present.  No preschool, no overnight trips with grandparents, nothing.  Basically the first time I ever interacted with any non-related people at all.

And that used to be considered normal.

After working in a licensed day care for 10 years, I can say that you just cannot put kids into a mold and/or have very specific expectations.  Kids are like fingerprints, they are unique individuals who have different ways of handling their world.  If they are 5, don't freak out about what some teacher said.  Don't jump to conclusions that your kid is somehow flawed.

Some kids love to sit quietly while a book is read and some just need to burn off energy and have trouble sitting still.  One of the kids could not sit still to hear a story to save his life.  He grew up to be an amazing athlete, played almost every sport and had a blast doing it.  Some kids are exuberant and say what they are thinking the minute it pops into their head.  One of my favorite kids who could not keep her mouth closed is now a successful district attorney.  Not all kids have ADHD, learning disabilities, etc.  I would say CHILL......

So instead of taking an active interest in my kid not being able to do the things he should be doing at his age I should have, what, waited until kindergarten? Left him in the woods for the wolves to raise?

Share your parenting wisdom with us.

He's in speech therapy too since he should be speaking a couple dozen words by now instead of zero. Should I take him out of that and just mark my calendar so I can move him to Georgia to run for Senate in 28.3 years?

Wasn't me who gave you funnies, kemosabe. Perhaps you should chill out & not be a high-strung perfectionist? I'd be hesitant to come out of my shell if I had someone watching me with a list, telling me I was a fark up according to a book written by child-less "experts" every time I didn't follow a to-the-minute checklist of perfection.

You proved you're exactly like that by having no patience & demanding I immediately attend to your rebuttal. Tone down the 'roids, they shrink your junk.

Clearly I'm not enough of an asshole for Fark so I'm out for a while.

Good luck, and I hope you expand your practice of talking shiat about people's kids and parenting to the real world where I'm sure it will work out well for you.

There are certain conditions, such as Autism, hearing disorders, and refusal to swallow solid foods, that must be treated as young as possible. Otherwise, a key treatment window can be missed.

Hopefully, the funnies were for: "Should I take him out of that and just mark my calendar so I can move him to Georgia to run for Senate in 28.3 years?"

It was a witty closing remark.

Our son was "that kid", we fought for years to get a proper diagnosis to get him the correct care and meds to help him be stable.  Mental and psychological care in this country is abysmal.
