The promotional value of this for recruiting is way more than the few grand they spent.  The message is on point and relevant to their target demographic. Nicely done!

It depends. There are a lot of Coast Guard posts that seem pretty pointless.
But overall, there really is nothing stupider than the "Space Force".

Not likely. That looks a hell of a lot like the high-altitude balloon flights which high schools use to launch their science-fair projects into "space". One of the frames from their video shows it "on orbit" 19 km above the ground, which leaves a considerable safety margin for it to avoid any real satellites.

Odd, I can't think of any British private orbital launch providers... maybe they used a weather balloon to just get it way up high where the curvature of the horizon is obvious?

You know what, I was going to say something about where you should permanently stow a large metallic item, but I don't want to get banned. I'm just glad you truly appreciate the fact that I can barely walk in my early middle age due to injuries sustained in the Coast Guard and would do it again if asked. Thank you for showing what a wonderful person you are.

Branches of the military having both regular and e-sports teams isn't new, and as they've long been recruiting tools, launching the trophy with the amount of attention it'll get is probably cheaper than other forms of advertising, so meh on the grand or so they spent to do that.

Of course, none of that changes the fact that Space Force itself is a farking joke.

Space force, and the name, and its existing mission, is silly. I'll give it that.

How it was org'd should have been peeling certain missions off of the airforce to a civilian agency. And if\when an actual departmental branch was needed, it should have had a less stupid name, to be sure.

Its not like some of the other quasi military branches of services where you potentially need a uniformed person (NOAA, Public Health), and the protections that come with that and chain of command.

I'm not sure what's worse - that eSports exists as a mainstream thing or that WE'RE FEDERALLY FUNDING THEM.

It was one thing when I'd go over to hang out with my friend, only to do a mental coin toss as to whether I was going to watch his Quake guild match or play something on console until he was done.  Having it on ESPN (I'm not a sports guy, so I don't watch, I just see it in the channel guide) and people at work thinking they can quit to kmake over $100K a year playing a video game (they didn't quit), I hope it crashes alongside digital currency in one big fireball.

I'm not a fan of esports, but i'm also not a big basketball, or bowling fan.

That doesn't mean it can't be used to improve morale, group cooperation, recruiting, and getting a message out, or at the very least, something fun for service members to do in their downtime. The military has bands for christ sake, for that purpose.

I highly doubt these guys were pulled off a critical mission to play call of duty.
