My wife switches on my cpap when my snoring is too annoying (and I forget to do it before I fall asleep)

It's still murder even if you're shutting off their ventilator to get some sleep.

Aw man. Worst I've seen is an ER doc turning off the alarms at the desk when the beeping was too much. The beeping is annoying but it's there for a reason.

zez: My wife switches on my cpap when my snoring is too annoying (and I forget to do it before I fall asleep)

Im surprised you can fall asleep with your CPAP mask on, yet the machine turned off.
Or does your wife also put your mask on your head, without waking you? That would seem impressive.

I just got a new cpap machine last month, after my previous one lasted 16 years, with several motherboard modifications by me to keep it limping along that long. Every time I took it on a flight, the TSA would freak out as if it was some sort of crude bomb given the condition the thing was in, with soldered wires, madly replaced components and solder blobs, duct tape etc.

The new one has useless features like bluetooth and wifi.

Police and prosecutors said in a statement that the suspect is alleged to have switched off a 79-year-old woman's ventilator and, despite then being told by staff that it was vital for the patient, switched it off again later in the evening.

She turned off someone's ventilator and they still kept her in the same room?

At least she didn't use the old: "I needed the outlet to buff the floor" excuse.

So... props?

That's nice of her. I may have put a pillow over my exes face when her snoring became unbearable, it didn't happen that often

Useless?  Well that depends, maybe we regard the ability to turn it off remotely as a positive.  Don't be so self-centered

I got forced into a ResMed Air Curve 10 (bilevel) a few months back after my Air Sense 10 died. The Air Curve is pretty convenient. Keep it clean and hydrated, just put the mask on when I lay down to sleep, take it off when I'm ready to get up. I could push the button on and off, but there's no point in it.

(A bit of air noise from the mask with the Air Curve--and it takes a half hour or so to wind down after the mask is off--but the machine is otherwise silent. Like the Air Sense.)

Alarm fatigue is a thing.  If everything is beeping all the time, it's hard to catch the one thing that is beeping to warn you something is going wrong.

/especially when machines can alarm for normal things like the patient moving or for no discernible reason at all

It gets better!

krank == sick

krankenhaus == "sick house" == hospital
krankenschwester == "sick sister" == nurse
krankenwagen == "sick wagon" == ambulance

(The "...en" on the end is just to make it match gender + count + case; it's been a long time since I've kept up on this, but I'd guess it's the genitive / possessive case, so "krankenhaus" would transliterate to either "house of sick" or "sick's house".)

Combo breaker: English "[medical] doctor" is either "Ärztin" (if the doctor is female) or "Arzt" (if male).

(And now I realize that I don't know how non-binary Germans refer to their occupations, since most of them come in either male or female. Looks like it got ugly, just like everywhere else that men were told they're not the only people that matter. I guess "Ärzt*innen", for the gender-neutral plural, at least? NPR article.)

(Also, I was today old when I discovered there is a non-binary wiki.)

Are you sure? Test it. Most of the instructions didn't tell me the Air Curve did. I learned by accident, later found a manual page that said so.

(The button isn't a big deal, but it feels liberating to eliminate that first and last task of the day.)

Lack of empathy for the needs of others seems to be a warning sign of mental deterioration such as dementia. As people age and remain ambulatory well past the point that their cognition can't keep up, there needs to be mandatory screening standards to make sure that people aren't a danger to themselves or others and that they have adequate supervision if not reasonably competent. Sometimes a person in their seventies is just a little forgetful and might lose their keys or glasses. At other times, they might decide that it's perfectly reasonable to shut off another person's necessary medical equipment. In addition to the lack of guidelines and treatment for mental health of the aging population, there's also a dearth of qualified "grandma/grandpa sitters" to keep up with the increasing numbers of seniors who can't/won't be in an assisted living facility.

/my mother is 72, fully physically active, and currently in a locked assisted-living facility because she can no longer recognize people or even dress herself properly
//she also has a lifetime of untreated severe mental illness that everyone else in the family ignored because I was the only one, even as a small child, that she would violently assault without any justification so they saw no reason to be concerned until she started attacking the aides hired to watch her
