Seems like this is the Thursday Fark Gaming thread.

2022-12-01 11:28:12 AM
Vampire Survivors is on Game Pass. I have heard a number of video game industry folks raving about this game so I gave it a try. Did one run and absolutely hated it. People who like it wanna share what makes it enjoyable for them?

Soccer Story is also on Game Pass. Hoo-boy does the game go heavy on the STORY side of the title. Played for around 45 minutes, one actual game of soccer during that time. Player swapping is sluggish for such a fast paced game, and early gameplay seems to be lacking in depth. We'll see how much longer I stick it out.

Best holiday game that I've played would be Until Dawn for the Halloween season. Haven't tried The Quarry yet, it's on the list to play at some point

In Vegas for AWS convention so only game I'm playing is DeepRacer, where you use machine learning to train a robot car to drive itself around a track with writing a bit of Python code for positive reinforcement.   My robot is an idiot but drives better than Elon Musks' cars.

I find that it's got a weird one-more-run quality that encourages you to go back and try new things. It's simple but addictive, with a very basic core loop and minimal lore that's mostly about how you shouldn't take it seriously.I've heard from a growing number of people who bounced off of it, though. A lot of VS's appeal comes down to how you feel about roguelikes in general, or games where your primary active contribution is simply movement/character building. I've heard it disparagingly compared to Cookie Clicker, and while that's not an entirely fair comparison, it's also not wholly undeserved.

Been playing Soul Hackers 2.  It's alright, but the environments get really tedious.

Favorite Holiday Game:  The Division. The survival mode in the first one is really good, I wish they'd bring that back.

I've really struggled with Cyberpunk 2077 after picking it up on sale. Awesome atmosphere. But I didn't expect the tutorial section to be so long nor there to be so many in game cut scenes. It made it a challenge to pick up and play briefly.

I wanted to see Ray tracing goodness on my 3080 Ti, but it kept crashing with it on. I've tried some other fixes because it continued to crash, just less frequently. I may try turning it back on again.

Sure.  For starters...one run?   You've barely scratched the surface, but you know you.

As you go, you unlock new characters, each with their own unique starting weapon.  You unlock new maps, each with their own strategy and collection of enemies.

Having trouble with it--try Darkwell's Guide to Survival (steam), but in general, use fire and magic wands along with King Bible and you'll be in good shape if you can get each of those evolved.

I bought that adventure/movie game the Quarry. Basically an interactive horror movie about camp counselors attacked by monsters.

You know how sometimes you watch a horror movie and you find yourself yelling at the screen because the characters keep doing dumb sh*t? Well, it turns out that when you have control over all the decisions you very quickly find yourself quietly nudging the kids into danger just to see what happens.

So far I haven't managed to kill anyone yet. But I don't think Nick is going to be around much longer.

Well, it's either Thursday, or I took a blow to the head.

I have been injecting Captain of Industry into my veins and continuing my adventures in DMZ / Warzone 2.0. DMZ is seriously the best new mode that they have added to Warzone, the AI is extremely challenging, the missions get harder as you go on and you have the threat of other teams wiping you hanging over your head. Lots of successful exfils the last week though, and mostly into the Tier 3 missions now.

COI is crack. It's the perfect mix of everything for me as I described last week. After my 5th restart, I think I've finally got everything going right too. I have started into the Tier 3 technologies, from working with multiple kinds of oil to having solid power generation from high power steam. The biggest thing I figured out is that fluid generators often hit the max that a pipe can transport, so you need to add subsequent generators further down the line or create secondary lines to carry things. The "resource super highway" also made a huge difference to my success in the early game.

Also key? Sprint to cargo ships and repair those and oil rigs that you find. Then you can basically have infinite oil and not rely on pumps that quickly deplete whatever you have to start with.

I've been working my way through pokemon scarlet kind of slowly. Just got to the ice mountain gym, once I beat it, I'll have 6 badges IIRC. 4/5 titan pokemon and 2/5 of the team goldfishpoop badges. Its got some issues, but overall I've been enjoying it. A lot of really powerful previous gen pokemon are easily accessible, so I haven't been great about using a team of mostly new pokemon, but still having fun with it.

I'll be downloading Front Mission: the re-remake when I get home from work. IIRC, its a fairly straightforward game, so I will probably play through it pretty quickly.

Well, I picked this up (5 years after the rest of the world) as part of a Black Friday sale:

But I haven't played it yet, since I said that I wasn't going to buy Breath of the Wilduntil I finished Pokémon Shield.

To that end, I got my Dragon gym badge:

I also confronted the Pokémon that was causing the Darkest Day:

I also beat Champion Leon and the base game. On top of that, I did two of the three Master Dojo trials in the Isle of Armor DLC.

On the PC front, I've still been streaming the occasional game of Magic the Gathering Arena, and finished November season in the lowly Silver tier. I'm going to actually try and build a proper Brother's Wardeck, probably in either Black/White or White/Red once I figure out the active archetypes.

I also streamed some LEGO Star Wars - The Skywalker Sagafrom my Switch, where I'm doing the movies in release order. Which means I started with the Episode IV - A New Hopemissions. I've gotten to the point where Obi-Wan Kenobi has become more powerful than I can possibly imagine, and have landed on Yavin IV...

And between NaNoWriMo (I hit 50K on the 28th!), and the World Cup that's all the video games activity.

Had a few tabletop Dungeons and Dragonssessions, and have a game tonight (Thursday) where I'm playing a Halfling Druid 2/Barbarian 1 "Beorn Bouncebear" and have 3D printed a HeroForge mini of him, and three of the creatures he can Wild Shape into (specifically a Dire Wolf, Brown Bear, and Giant Spider).

I also have three or four different TTRPG rulebooks that I'll be writing a character creation entry for my blog, which I'll probably link to next week.

What's worse about the button config is that "Confirm" and "Cancel" are not always in the same place.

I don't really think of the buttons by what symbol is on them, I think North, South, East, West. And South and East are swapped all too often.

From what I've read Sony still has "East" as confirm and "South" as cancel in Japan but for some reason they switched it in other parts of the world.

Breath of the Wild does it right for button prompts with a little compass and the direction highlighted.

I made it to Chapter 5 in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I started the side story "Cindered Shadows" to unlock free stuff (characters, etc).

Holy cow the difficulty on some of the side missions. :S

I'm on chapter 6 of the side story and holy hell lol. I'm nearly done the chapter 6 battle.

Hmm, a 2nd one would be nice esp as I finally got emulation working on it correctly. Throwing every BIOS file I could find into just the plain BIOS folder & not the subfolders was the solution.

It's bad enough when you go from one game to another. After playing Cyberpunk, trying to get into Fallout mode just sucked. Couldn't bring up a menu, had to think about how to crouch, kept having to think about where the VATS button was, kept accidentally dosing myself with chems.

Cross platforms? Even the muscle memory gets borked even further.

Picked up my Fallout 4 game I started before the pandemic that I put a few hours a month into.  It's an epic settlement builder playthrough with crazy settlement builds that take like 15-20 hours per settlement.  I've been doing Vault 88 for probably close to 30 hours now...25 of that was just the main area. I probably have another 15-20 hours in Vault 88, minimum. I shutter to think how many in-game days have passed.  Sheng the boy-water-seller is probably an elderly grandfather by now.  In real-life days, I imagine fallout 9 will be out by the time I get done with this thing.

I'd hope it would be more stable on a Series X.  I run FO4 on my PC.  I did play it on the PS4 but I prefer to play Skyrim/Fallout on PC.

But yes, it definitely is a hoarder simulator.  Years ago I did a playthrough as Claire Underwood from House of Cards, where settlements were essentially her private army to take over and control the commonwealth (i.e. a minuteman playthrough).  I figured she'd probably have her own store of stuff hidden away from everyone, so I used both Home Plate and a settlement (I believe it was Croup Manor but I forget) where I specifically collected things like food and weapons and created basically the equivalent of doomsday bunkers for her.  I think it was before the Vault 88 DLC came out or that would have been the obvious one to use.

Nowadays I can't be bothered to hunt for specific materials years after the game is out and probably beating it a bunch of times.  I just console command building materials and stuff I'm using for decorations on PC.

I'm running pretty early in the game still--with Starfield on the way, I wanted to get back into a Bethesda game, and remind myself of their limitations and quirks--but it's early into this run. My Sole Survivor is still weak and squishy, and is still sorting himself out. Sneaky and chatty, and a little bit of a Boy Scout, albeit a Smart Ass.

I always like to have a special little nook at the Red Rocket just outside of Sanctuary. If you don't put Settlers there, you don't get attacked by Raiders. I'm also having some morality issues with my romance of Curie in my last playthrough. Seems kinda...creepy now. Yes, if you dress her up in Kellogg's armor, she looks and sounds like the cutest little French Partisan, but after getting her a new body and taking her with you, it seems more and more creepy to hit on someone so...yeah, I don't really want to be THAT guy. Same with Cait--you get her clean of chems, and THEN romance her?  Again, got some creeper vibes.

I'm just going to take my time with it. See where it goes. It's been a while, so rather than being Master of All I Survey, it's kind of nice to be just feeling things out. Last run, I had kitted out as many of my caravans with miniguns, along with just a stupid number of other heavy weapons for my settlers. At the point when your settlements start rolling in caps, instead of the other way around, you are getting cash infusions at a slow but steady rate, and you can take your time to dump all the weapons you collect from yobs who think, "hey, that heavily armed guy with the cool looking armor? I wanna rob HIM!" I figure by the time I get through Nuka World, I'll have the Commonwealth under my settlements' thumbs, and we will be the premiere trading empire.

Finally found Leda in Vampire Survivors last night, after three previous fruitless attempts.  Leda is huge, not terribly quick, but is pretty much a tank.  As such, Leda was key to unlocking Ambrojoe EZPZ right before I quit for the night, thought I could probably have done that with several other of my characters, as it appears the various Deaths that inhabit Capella Magna are gone once you kill them once.

kind gave up on super mario 3d world with only the two hardest levels left. might check out bowser's fury for s/g this weekend.

started in on Hades and it lives up to the hype so far. first it was too hard, then too easy, now appropriately hard again, which is how most rougelikes tend to go for me. still figuring out which boons and other in-game options will optimize a run, but obviously that's part of the fun/challenge. struggling a little bit with the bone hydra but almost got him last time and think i'll have it next time...can only imagine how much the next level will kick my ass...

also played a bit of Super Meat Boy, which is decent despite the super imprecise/slippery controls. celeste was a far more refined experience, but i'll probably also see this through to the end.

up next in the queue: Blasphemous, Ori and the Blind Forest, and whatever other random Switch games go on super-sale + whatever the new PS Plus games drop on Tuesday.

2022-12-02 9:22:32 AM
I'll be starting Marvel Midnight Sun at some point today.  X-Com never clicked with me, but I think that had more to do with the fact that "Space Marine" is probably my absolute least favorite genre setting than the actual gameplay itself (Mass Effect, notwithstanding).  Plus, nothing else was really grabbing me right now so I figured I'd give something way outside my usual gaming palate (fantasy RPGs) a try.  I hope it's good because that $70 price point for new PS5 games is just...painful.

On the tabletop, I picked up Tyrants of the Underdark on a whim the other day.  It is an absolutely fantastic combination of deck building and area control.  Fairly simple mechanics with lots of plotting and scheming that can go on under the hood.  It's a perfect fit for the Underdark setting and has been a ton of fun, both with the kids and using the solo variant.

More Jedi Fallen Order. Traipsed through the Darth Maul planet.  The having to come back later with new upgrades to collect everything is getting a bit annoying since I'd like to complete as I go and I hate backtracking deep into a planet to discover that I still can't make new progress.  But otherwise still fun with the growing roster of moves and powers.

RedPhoenix122: Favorite Holiday Game:  The Division. The survival mode in the first one is really good, I wish they'd bring that back.

It just bothered me that I have a controller with 11 buttons and the game uses zero of them. I have a whip attack that automatically goes every 3 seconds, but it is only on the exact horizontal plane when I'm being mobbed at 360 degree angles? I could understand the love if this was an 80s arcade cabinet, not something getting rave reviews in the modern day.

Playing thru Breath of the Wild for the third time.

I've got the Master Sword, finished the Sword Trials DLC, working on farming for outfit upgrades and getting the upgraded divine beast skills and the ancient motorcycle.  A fully upgraded master sword is a thing of beauty: A power rating of 60 and a significantly reduced cool-down period.

Before I get too much farther, I'm trying to knock off all the quests that take away your quality items.  Master Sword Trials, the Island shrine, re-fighting all the divine beast bosses, etc.

Going to try for a 100% run this time.  Last run I gave up looking for korok seeds after I unlocked all the inventory slots.  This time I'm trying to farm them as I go thru each section so I don't end up with "finding a few hundred seeds" and "defeating Ganon" as my last 2 tasks.

After that the only thing left would be to move on to Hard mode, and I'm not sure I'm ready to go there yet.

Only thing I got to this week is Vampire Survivors. I think I have unlocked all of the characters but the one for completing the collection. Working on getting all of the arcana cards and purchasing the permanent blocks.

QOTW: Borderlands 2 had all all of the holiday hunter packs, so I'm gonna go with that.

Klivian: DragonIV: Klivian: Vampire Survivors is on Game Pass. I have heard a number of video game industry folks raving about this game so I gave it a try. Did one run and absolutely hated it. People who like it wanna share what makes it enjoyable for them?

Sure.  For starters...one run?   You've barely scratched the surface, but you know you.

What I liked:  Each run, you figure out more what works and what doesn't...then you figure out you can evolve the weapons, and begin to open more of the game.  Yes, RNG can be brutal in this game in terms of what upgrades you get, but you can typically salvage most games.  Take the gold you earn and upgrade your stats, making the next run even better.

Yeah. The first few runs did kinda suck. If you want direction, look at the unlock list on the main menu. Focus on getting the other power ups unlocked. For instance, picking up 5 floor chickens gets you garlic, which tends to be a great item early run. It definitely follows the rouge formula of having early runs be hard to have that great feeling later when you can stand in one spot and be untouchable.
