People didn't avoid Lightyear because it had a quarter of a second gay kiss (that even though I was purposefully looking for it, I did not see it).  People avoided it because it was not a good movie.

It was also poorly marketed because it just focused on the stupid kiss instead of the rest of the movie, but that's probably because the rest of the movie sucked.

Disney spent the entire pandemic training people to watch Disney films on Disney+. I said it a few threads ago about Pixar: Lightyear won't be the last Pixar movie to underperform at the box office. Strange World won't be the last Disney film to underperform at the box office. This is the new normal. Get used to it.

Also, if you want kids to flock to a new franchise, don't make it about people. Make it about a cute monster, or a cute animal, or a cute dragon. People are a very hard sell. The Incredibles were at least superheroes. Even the marketing material for "Up" focused on the balloons, and that was way back in 2009. I doubt that movie would have been successful today.

No conspiracy needed is fine, but I'd still like to know why the marketing budget for a $180 million movie was $1.25 and wishful thinking.

Didn't even know it was coming out. Though even before COVID we generally saved animated films for home viewing.

Anecdotally, I never saw a single piece of pre-release marketing for Encanto. It just showed up on the "New to Disney+" category one day and I clicked it because there was nothing else to watch.

Weird part about this is I think they did. I saw a posterboard for it in the lobby when the last Spider-man movie was in theaters

Kids don't care about seeing shiat in a theater unless all their friends are. If someone like me, who used to go multiple times a week from childhood, doesn't give a shiat anymore, it's hard to imagine kids who have never done so keeping the format alive.

Which is a big shame, there are some directors/animators who can really put out something that's spectacular on a big screen. The spirit realm in Kung Fu Panda 3, Berk and the Hidden World in How To Train Your Dragon 3.

The only reason I go to movies anymore is to avoid spoilers, like Wakanda. Other movies I was I interested in like Don't Worry Darling and Smile, went to streaming so fast, there wasn't an urgency.
This had nothing I was familiar with so why not wait?
Movie theaters suck nowadays anyway. I can't remember the last movie I went to where the rest of the public forgot to shut the fark up. Even during Wakanda, the 3 older guys (around 60) who had to sit with a chair between them or I'm assuming people might think they were gay like in high school, had to yell to each other where they last saw certain actors.
I'm fine at home with my comfy chair and 70in tv. With Covid, active shooters, prices and the general public with no manners, the time of full theaters has passed.

I'm sure, but all I care about is films shot on real film. Don't even care about acting as a craft either. Not that animation/digital isn't valid, I just have no interest in those techniques. Just the cinematography, editing etc.

I have two kids, we watch a lot of Disney+, and I go to the theatre probably once a month. If any demo should've heard about this movie it's me, but I only found out about this movie after reading about how it bombed. Never once saw a trailer.

Disney has been showing the extended cut of the trailer for some time at Walt's One Man's Dream thing in Hollywood Studios...
We saw it a couple weeks ago and the movie looks cool enough.   There was nothing in the trailer about anyone being gay tho.

I also saw the trailer before this, but unsure if it was before Thor 4 or if I heard about it and casted it to the TV from yourube.

Disney never marketed the kiss.   That was just the internet anti-woke a-holes talking about it non stop like it was some disgusting thing...   They biatched about the same sex couple in Finding Dory too, which honestly could have just been a lady with her sister or friend, I dont think anything in that scene implied they were actually gay.
As much as Tim Allen has turned into a tool apparently, I would have rather him voiced buzz than Evans.   Chris did ok I guess, but it just didnt feel right.  

Pre Covid, would def have gone to the theater to see Strange Worlds.
Now I only see a few movies a year.  Usually the Marvel ones to avoid online spoilers or other sci-fi types.. 
and they look pretty on the big screen.

Yup, having a nice TV and sound system makes it so hard to want to drive to a theater anymore....

Well, do recall that Tangled was just Rapunzel and Frozen was The Snow Queen. Both were modern films about very old fairy tales. Strange World is just some new weird IP that they dreamed up like The Croods. I still have no idea what it is about and I've seen tons of marketing related to it.

The argument I have heard is that the characters and their development doesn't service the story. The question then is what does it serve? For me it's a shoehorn to serve another purpose outside of the movie. This being marketed as a family movie makes it even more questionable.

We don't go to theaters anymore, and I can't see us going back any time in the foreseeable future. The wife and I are not the norm, but there's going to be a chunk of the potential viewing audience like us which has essentially just vanished.

We upgraded our home theater setup in 2020, and are quite happy with it. At home we can eat snacks, drink beer, and get high while watching a movie if we want and without the coughing, munching, talking, and other distractions of people around us. And - probably most importantly to us - we're not going to catch COVID so we can see what Spider-Man's up to now a few weeks earlier than we can just staying at home.

I'm not sure when, if ever, we'll be going back to seeing movies in person in the theater.

Check your local city for Historical Theaters. Showing classic movies.
They often have been repurposed into concert venues. But most still have the projector. screen, and seats. And will play classic movies in classic setting.

I live near an 80' screen with reserved reclining chairs, so I'm cool with going there.  I'm just more selective.  I only go see blockbusters that will look cool on that giant screen.

My kids just weren't interested in these movies.
I think the last cartoon we saw was Minions 2. The next one will probably be mario.

I don't get the appeal of Strange World. It just did not look interesting. Ended up seeing Lightyear on video and man that was a weird movie. Art style for 6 year olds and plot for 13 year olds into.. physics.

Yeah, they pulled back when the Omnicron variant started kicking up.  Only played theatrical in markets that didn't have Disney Plus

I feel bad, kinda.  From 2017 to 2019, I made it a habit to visit the theater because it's one of the only breaks I have from my endless job.

But I haven't been able to get back since the corona. I have maybe one day off a week, and streaming is just so much more convenient.

I think it was always in the cards that I was going to become a bit of a hermit.

"A gay character"... I feel like this is a trick question, because I see 5 potentials here... and the dog makes the list.

Seriously though, 5.6% of the U.S. population identifies as LGBLT or non straight, yet I can't go a day without hearing this kind of story.  I'm all for equal rights for everyone, but I'm also for appropriate apportionment.

Democrats get sucked in to this lopsided issue (and non issues and it alienates them from the a large portion of the 94.6% vanilla crowd.

Drag Queen Storytime - I'm all for drag queens doing their thing, but I don't want them, or strippers reading to my 3rd grader.  That opens up a slew of R rated questions for a G rated audience.

Gender reassignment - I don't know that kids should be involved in that in 70% of the cases, but like abortion, it should be between the family and their doctor, not a town square issue, for or against.  It's not political, it's personal.

Bathrooms/litterboxes - Biggest BS dog whistle for the hateful.  Make every public bathroom unisex and station an attendant to keep an eye on things... and provide those mints and a towel... problem solved.

People just aren't that enthusiastic about seeing a movie in theaters unless it has a reason you have to see it in theaters. Dune, Marvel movies, etc. often have special effects, soundtracks, etc. to justify seeing them in theaters. This movie had almost no advertising and the target market has been reluctant to go to theaters.

Same. I have two kids who watch a lot of Disney+ and I never heard about it. We are cord-cutters and do pay to get rid of YouTube ads, but you'd think there'd be some sort of ads, even just with football games or the evening news, something.

It had a CinemaScore of B.  By Disney standards, that is horrific.  And when you've trained audiences to wait for streaming, they're not going back into the theater unless it's an absolute must-see.

I had the same thoughts.  I would say the prime example of this is Disney's "Brave", a title that tells you absolutely nothing about the movie.  At least "Tangled" and "Frozen" are one step above completely generic.  My gut feeling is that they slap these mundane titles on what they suspect are not going to be well received films.  I think "Lightyear" was named in a similar vein.  No sequel or prequel should ever get a one word title.  It should have been something "Buzz Lightyear vs. The Evil Zurg Horde!" or something similarly fun and fantastical.  That movie was neither so it got a blah title.  "Strange World" is also a pretty blah title.  "Upside Down Fantastic World", "Mysterious Hidden World", "Magical Dreamscape World" - give us some reason to want to see this movie, Disney.

Tangled, Frozen, and even Lightyear at least gave the audience a clue about what the story will be about or the setting. Tangled - has a connection to hair, thread, etc. It makes sense for a story about Rapunzel and is a good description of the relationship between Rapunzel and Mother Gothel. Frozen - Something about ice and snow or a place freezing. Lightyear - Space, probably has a connection to Buzz Lightyear. Strange World - ? That could refer to just about anything, even a documentary about animals.

I genuinely enjoy going to the theater and would will probably take my daughter to see this, but honestly, I didn't know it was in theaters and didn't know it was Disney, and I was literally in the theater on Sunday watching Wakanda Forever.

I'm probably not the easiest person to advertise to.  The closest thing I use to social media is Fark, and I don't have network TV, but I spend a fair amount of time on the internet being advertised crap I would never want to buy, and I opt in to targeted advertising.

Pretty sure this is one of those issues that russian and chinese bot farms blast US social media with 'stories' and memes that are then repeated by the small set of right wing aholes...

9gag suffers from this also.   Everyone just wants memes and laughs, but scroll through fresh and 50% of the posts are about Trans this and Hunter's laptop...    If there's 1 drag story in america or 1 teacher that has some weird pronoun issue with 1st graders, its posted billions of times to make it seem like its a huge issue.  
some people are just dumb.

Now do Bambi, Snow White, and Peter Pan. AND What the F is a "Cinderella"...or "Swiss Family Robinson" It's not even remotely about Cheese. And DUMBO...???.... Seriously. Nothing about the movie in that title give you any clue it's about a Elephant.

Yeah, those Black people were only 5.6 percent of the population in CA, Vermont, And New Hampshire.

Peter Pan - famous play and book by that point, so it was already recognizable. Dumbo -portmanteau of dumb and Jumbo. Jumbo was a famous elephant so possibly elephants otherwise something not so intelligent and big.

I missed two. Cinderella- famous fairytale with numerous adaptations. Swiss Family Robinson - Might be a story like Robinson Crusoe, a famous book with a Swiss family.
