It will make extra money in the theater, qualify as a theatrical release for award season, and they won't lose a single subscriber over it.

They will make more from a couple going to the theater than they would from a month of service.

I use a month as standard. If they stick around longer it is because of other content. I have already developed a cycle of turning HBO, Hulu, Disney+, and Paramount+ on for a month to binge what came out in the prior 6-8 months. The only streaming I keep year round are Netflix (bundled with phone), Amazon (need Prime), and Peacock ($1/mo).

Dave Chappelle is at his funniest when he's chain-smoking cigarettes and lecturing the crowd about how pimps beat up their hoes, but the hoes keep coming back, because liberalism is a lie.  That's some hard street truth only a cynical comedian from Yellow Springs Ohio can lay on you.

Now, if you'll excuse Mr. Chappelle, he needs to stop some poor people from living too close to his neighborhood Whole Foods.

I never cared about Chappelle before this.  He was just some dude who was on after South Park.

I actually watched a couple of his standup shows to see what the outrage was about.  It was greatly overblown and there was generally nothing offensive IMO.

I probably wouldn't have watched them if it wasn't in the news everywhere.

Sure they will. Anyone who wants to see it that doesn't have Netflix and couldn't make it into the theater for that week.

And they're not leaving 100mil on the table. Not just because they probably don't have all that favorable of a split for theater to only run their movie for a week but you also vastly over estimating the box office draw of the property.

"If someone tells you they were offended, you don't get to decide they weren't."

You DO get to decide whether or not you care that they were offended, though - and THAT speaks volumes all on its own.

// ok, so the source of that quote is Louis CK

The opposite of that is starving to death. Eating meat means torturing chickens and being vegan means torturing farmworkers.

We all turn a blind eye to a ton of harm. A comedian moderately ridiculing a group of people? Doesn't come close to a real problem.

"So farking what?"

So, you can either apologize for having (unintentionally?) hurt someone's feelings, or you can decide you don't care if you hurt their feelings - the former offers the chance for self-reflection and to "do better", the latter just makes you an asshole.

Like I said, you're free to choose which of those paths to take.

In this case? I don't really care that I hurt your feelings by offering only two choices or using the word 'asshole' (and the cost of having done so, I'd wager, is rather small) - which makes me at least some fractional part of an asshole.

I'm fine with that.

Dave Chapelle is no George Carlin, even though both of them were pretty savvy skewerers of society.

The underlying message in Carlin's later "comedy" was on the order of "life is absurd, and then we make it cruel to boot". Chappelle's message lately just seems to be "don't you people understand how right I am about everything?" and then lashing out at everyone who disagrees.

Dark observations are fine - comedy is supposed to make you think, first and foremost - but when those observations are fundamentally mean-spirited, it's not the right kind of gallows for the humor (if'n you catch my meaning).

The original released in a pre-pandemic period, wasn't competing for theaters with a Black Panther movie, and for the original a 50-50 split with theaters domestic wouldn't be a 100mil profit for Netflix. If there's a lot of people out there who want to watch it they can pay a month of Netflix and Netflix will keep 100% of it no splitting needed. If they already have Netflix, keeping them is also a value add.

Either way the idea that they're leaving money on the table for Glass Onion is silly.
