Nah, this way is better. If it was together and had passed, they wouldn't be able to campaign on "Republicans don't support sick leave."  You have to remember that the job of a congressperson is not to legislate or represent their constituency, it is to get reelected or help their party members in their elections.

Except I want the laborers to have, you know, time to see their doctors or families.

But that campaign boost is good, too, I guess.

The New Labor Wars will be fought with a much more heavily-armed group of workers.

It will be important to distribute a pamphlet of America's labor history, so everyone knows just how much mercy those who support the robber barons should receive.

The intervention was particularly difficult for Democratic lawmakers who have traditionally sought to align themselves with the politically powerful labor unions

... pro-union Democrats?

Wow, that time portal allowing people from farking 1979 to post on the internet in 2022 sure is a marvel of modern technology.  Nice of them to share with us some ancient lore of long-lost days of yore and things that essentially haven't happened in farking living memory, though: thanks for the history lesson, guys, good luck with that south rising again thing or whatever.

Remember when the Democrats split their reconciliation bill into two parts: the progressive social part (BBB) and the corporate funding part (BIF)? Remember that the Democrats did this to explicitly kill the progressive bill (BBB) while passing the corporate funding bill (BIF). They had already done this prior with the minimum wage bills.

That's the same philosophy Democrats are using here. They split up the rail union bills into two parts: 1) the same damned contract that the workers rejected in September, and 2) the sick time leave that the workers are fighting for.

They did this to pass the contract while claiming they tried to pass the sick leave while knowing it will get killed in the senate.

Joe Biden is doing this because "the consequences of the strike would be unbearable"...WHICH IS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF A STRIKE. Joe Biden and the Democrats are explicitly taking the role of Saint Reagan and union busting private workers in the name of commerce.

It's a terrible look for "the most progressive president ever."

That vote is for the bill to force the unaltered contract that the unions already rejected.

The sick leave bill is a separate bill and is detailed later in the article:

I have pulled the lever for democrats every election since 2004, never again.  I will never vote for a republican either, but forget these guys.

The abortion rights kill me, but I'm a union worker who has thrown his life away on 6 day work weeks for 6 of the last 10 years because my employer keeps on the - for the greater good - messaging.  D's are just as complicit in ruining my life as R's.  I'm done, son.  All of my extra energy is going in to working with homeless people from now on.

My uncle worked on the railroads his whole life. He had been a dyed in the wool Democrat until the mid-2000s when he started grumbling that "they're all crooks."

He was a Trump voter who hated Trump and called him a crook too. He just wanted change in the system.

Given the Democrats' actions this week, it's not hard to argue with him, but I tried bringing him over to the third party so that he wouldn't be voting for TFG.

One doesn't even need to go back to the 1920s. Harlan County USA is an essential documentary on the war over union and labor rights. That battle took place in 1973.

Yes, I misread (didn't finish reading) things. But you're being deceptive.
8 of 12 unions accepted the proposal. 4 did not. The writing is also confused. It's about 7 additional sick leave days, it isn't like they don't have any.

I've known a few long haul train engineers. It's a rough job and it takes a heavy toll on individuals and families. On the same hand, it's also a dream job for many who simply grew up with a passion for trains. I confess that I do not know enough to put forward a judgement about the 8 unions who accepted the proposal versus the 4 who rejected it.

Those four unions represent a majority of the rail workers.

They do not currently have true time off.

They have personal time off, PTO, which is unpaid, but they're on call.  And, if they schedule a day off, get called in, and don't come in, they lose points which can get them fired.

It often takes weeks of working without a day off to remake points.

What they asked for was for their PTO to not be on call, and not be punished for not coming in on days off.

Have you tried to read anything about this before spouting off in here?

Democrats could have added the sick leave to the contract in the house and watch the Republicans fall all over themselves trying to explain why they're voting against it. While it probably wouldn't achieve Saint Reagan's goal of farking over unions by averting a rail strike without concessions from the companies because the Republicans would probably filibuster the bill, it would have:
1) been beneficial for unions to be backed up by one party

2) Been beneficial for Democrats to demonstrate their union standing

And, 3) been detrimental to Republicans to explain why they voted against everyday workers.

Nah, this way is better. If it was together and had passed, they wouldn't be able to campaign on "Republicans don't support sick leave."  You have to remember that the job of a congressperson is not to legislate or represent their constituency, it is to get reelected or help their party members in their elections.

Oh cool, it's good for campaigning.

Except I want the laborers to have, you know, time to see their doctors or families.

But that campaign boost is good, too, I guess.

...

Then you should reserve your ire for the people who voted against it instead of rushing in here to shiat on the people who voted for it.
