FTFA-Much of Putin's political legitimacy derives from the illegal annexation of the peninsula in 2014, after which his popularity surged.

This is why the general populace of Russia can go get farked.  Do you think Biden's popularity would surge when if we annexed Nova Scotia?  Seriously, what kind of POS cheers when their country illegally takes part of another, free country?

"It seems that Zelensky's team makes all statements on the issue of Crimea in a besotted state," Gempel said.

In vino veritas

This is why I'm in favor of a cultural genocide - working towards the nearly complete destruction of Russian culture as it is today so we don't have to fight the Russians of tomorrow.  And just in case, we ought to be helping any oppressed sub-populations break free and Balkanize the hell out of Russia as a safety check.

We 'played nice' after the Soviet Union failed, and Russians just took that as an opportunity to try brutal empire-building again.

While it's rather convenient for the conquerors, a line does have to be drawn in history beyond which you stop trying to settle grievances.  The state version of a statute of limitations.  I figure once nobody's alive who remembers talking to anyone who was alive (and old enough to know what was going on) during the original offense, that's probably where it should end.  Say, from the start of a generation to the death of the third.  When all the grandchildren have died, perhaps a little over a hundred years.

I'm not going to disagree with that we can't reverse thousands of years of invasions and annexations and instead just need to stop the cycle on the here and now. The point of my 54°40' comment was that we can't simply declare everyone in a country which crowds cheer aggression to be all p.o.s. without confronting the reality that American crowds have cheered naked aggression against other nations many times. And ditto for most every nation on the planet. The choice is between declaring humanity to be a pieces of shiat or to attempt to be more nuanced.

"Such statements are a fountain of crazy and sick fantasies."

I know this is simply outlandish propaganda meant to sway the more insulated Russian public, but man, I think that if the Ukrainians were having actual sick and crazy fantasies about the war, they'd involve a little more than taking back illegally conquered land.

One normal bullet, at close range, would end all this.

It's Greenland, not Nova Scotia.
Hey, we already have an old military base there with a nuclear power plant and everything.
