I called it that way at the time. Damn few pilots who reached his level would end their life intentionally over a bad landing.  Plenty other reasons like divorce or bankruptcy or child porn.

Subby, linked article is based on an autopsy report. I don't see any ruling from the NTSB.

Back when I did some skydiving, the pilot was required to wear a parachute also. Still true? Did this guy take his off?

"At some point, the decedent (copilot) opened a cockpit window for ventilation and possibly to vomit. Sometime after, he told the pilot that he felt he was going to be sick and apologized..."

He should have had the lasagna.

Only required in single engine aircraft...

So this could have been:
A - An accident
B - A suicide
C - A perfect crime

I guess we'll never know.

Many life insurance policies cover suicide, but only if you've had the policy for more than several years.

Whether you accidentally fell or intentionally jumped, it seems you would still die from blunt force trauma either way...

He was at least polite enough to blow his chunks out the back.

Gotta be courteous to the next pilots who have to sit there.  Mi CASA es su CASA.

I found the article confusing. They dumped a load and while landing back at DZ he pranged the gear, so they decided to fly to Raleigh? Why? Soft field? Maintenance services at Raleigh? Must've been one helluva prang, for them to know it was damaged, it's a fixed gear it looks like. And on a STOL that's going to be some stout gear. Of course, by the time an aircraft gets to a DZ, it's at EOL and a total POS. The 182 we used in North Georgia belonged to a Russian circus before us. Poor kid, probably worked for an asshole.

Don't look at the comments there, the only useful information in them is that if the reporter says, "their backyard" instead of "his/her backyard" he/she is Pro-Gay-Frog.

Sorry, but there aren't nearly enough acronyms in this post.

They might have wanted the ground crew to look at the gear before attempting the next landing.  Or, they wanted to land somewhere where there was more emergency and fire gear, just in case.  Or, that was were the maintenance would have to be done.

You omitted "or were intentionally pushed out..".
Not saying that it did happen, but it is within the realm of possibility.

Not really, pilot was in constant contact  with the tower until after dude was already gone.  There'd be recordings where you could tell the difference between being in the cockpit and walking out back.

How did the autopsy report come to that conclusion?  I'm not saying his death happened any other way.  I'm not trying to make a statement to his frame of mind at all.  It was a tragic death.

I understand MEs can rule deaths as accidental in many circumstances based on multiple factors, like someone found near a ladder and died from blunt force damage from falling while working...

But in this instance there is literally no way to tell the difference between fell, jumped, or pushed.  The body is going to land about the same way in all those instances no matter what.  So it seems disingenuous to put such a declarative statement to a situation we just don't know.  It's ok not to know things.

While I don't think he was pushed, unless there were ghosts on the plane, we honestly have no idea what happened and probably never will.

I'm not trying to besmirch the dead dude.

I'm not trying to be conspiratorial about his death.

I'm not trying to make any proclamations about the dudes frame of mind.  I know even less than the ME here.  My only problem here is the ME making a definitive statement to a mystery that we will probably never know what actually happened.

Something about SOP on DOAs from the FAA?

I believe the thinking is that absent any proof of suicide or foul play, you go with accidental. Kid went back to puke, was seen near open door and not holding the safety bar, so accidental. Suicide or Foul Play requires much greater leaps in logic than a simple accident.

Ramp was open and the copilot was in the back. I, in the pilot seat, could suddenly pitch the plane nose up on purpose ..."ooopps!!".

Maybe he was really annoying the other pilot with his hysterics, so when he went to the back, that pilot jiggled the plane a little and made him fall out. <mostly kidding but you never know>

Worse when they decide not only to take their own life but also the lives of the passengers as well. Like Silk Air 185 and the other one (don't remember flight designation) from BCN into a mountain, and some others, not terrorism related.

You're right and look how young the person was...he may not have had life insurance for two years.
