I do PA at a lot of high school games. I have the following read in before every game:

"Tonight's game will be officiated by _________, _________ and _________. To help make these games possible, consider becoming an official yourself! Visit [the state association website] for information on becoming certified."

It's the most polite way I could come up with to preemptively say, "If you're going to yell at the refs, you clearly think you can do their job better than they do. So ... go do it. Here's how."

I feel like compensation is the conduit for them to talk about other issues. Most high school refs only officiate part-time. It's a popular beer-money job for guys close to retirement. They probably don't care that much about the pay.

Problem is, just saying "Sportsmanship has to get better or we walk" would probably just get empty promises.

By asking for more pay, they can probably negotiate down to guarantees each school will provide some sort of security escort after games, a distinct reporting system with real punishments for fans and coaches for bad behavior, and so on. "Well, either this or you can pay us more to deal with the crap we deal with. One or the other."

800 refs try and walk out, they'll get a raise.

Millions of railway workers threaten to strike, it takes an act of Congress to get them sick leave.

Their pay rates vary a little, but I know several refs who almost had to quit in 2008 because they were paying more in gas than they were making.  And pay hasn't increased substantially since then.

Youth sports refs in general are paid next to nothing for the privilege of being screamed at by insane parents.  Between that and other issues with making a living, ref shortages are approaching crisis levels.  Virginia was having to stagger high school games on Thursday and Friday nights before Covid, because of shortages.

People whine about pro refs now, in 10-15 years it will get much worse because the talent pool will be much smaller to promote from.

Also, the NC state legislature tried last year to restructure the NCHSAA to gain more political control.  Enough of the right people balked at the idea that the worst changes were dropped from the oversight plan (including dissolving the NCHSAA).  While some of the same shiatty RWNJs shrieking about trans women "gaining unfair advantages" tried to slip some political bullshiat past everyone, at the heart of the matter was good-ol'-fashioned unadulterated butthurt about a team being disqualified from the playoffs over a fight.

/There's a reason we started calling the NC General Assembly the Genital Assembly; they were more worried about what package people were taking into bathrooms and locker rooms, than with taking care of the state's business.

No idea what they get paid for basketball, but I officiate HS swim meets and get paid $60 for weekday dual meets and $150 for Saturday invites. Nothing you're going to create a career doing, but a little bit of extra fun money.

I reffed/umpired for beer money while in college. Probably 75% of games were fine. Another 20% just had that one asshole who thought he (or his kid) was going pro and the refs were screwing him, but since it was just one it was easy to deal with  But then there was that 1 game out of 20 where there were multiple sets of assholes on both sides that were going to make things miserable for everyone else.

No mention of security for the officials?  Must be in next year's bargaining set.

The article linked in paragraph 3 says:
Under current policy, NCHSAA basketball officials are paid $69.50 for a single varsity game, $105 for a varsity double-header, or $59 for a single junior varsity game. Officials organizing the protest are asking for $85 for a single varsity game, $170 for a varsity double-header, and $80 for a single junior varsity game.

Been umpiring high school and rec league girls softball for 10 years now. On the high school side (this is in California), varsity games pay $72/game, JV and Frosh pay $67/game (I have no idea why those numbers were chosen). The rec league games pay $50 for 6/8/10 year old divisions and the 12/14/16 age group games pay $60 each (older division games last longer).

The money isn't big, but it isn't nothing, either....that said, tomorrow night is my last game and then I'm stepping away because I'm just done with it. The sportsmanship thing is the single biggest reason I'm getting out.

/CSB or something

Refs, Umpires and Officials for high school sports are paid very little competitively when you look at the expenses that are required to be one. to say nothing of the time put in studying rules and regulations.
