(Billboard)   Turns out there's a lot of filler on Thriller   (billboard.com) divider line
More: Interesting, Michael Jackson, trusted producer Quincy Jones, Little Brother, Jackson's crossover moves, tricky-enough transition, Wall album, modern pop blockbuster, Justin Timberlake

Just the other day I was singing 'The Girl is Mine' to myself, and wondering at the amazing terribleness of that particular song, it is exquisitely bad. The rest of the album is great, of course.

I'm not a Michael Jackson fan really but that album is very strong and does not have a lot of filler in my opinion.

When I bought this album as a teen, as everyone my age did, it was because of Beat It and Billie Jean. And I loved Off the Wall, his previous album. The infamous threat to play his videos on MTV or you get none of our artists by Epic helped this album sell stratospheric amounts to people who most likely have never heard or seen it. Off the Wall sold 8 million without MTV. And while the Thriller video, by this point being promoted by MTV with a countdown to the world premiere (after a one week run in select movie theaters to qualify for Oscar consideration) was groundbreaking, I never really liked the song that much. Bad, his next album, I thought was much better, except, again, the title song. After that, didn't really care for any of his songs, but those 3 consecutive releases hold up to any other artist or group. Oh, the first tour he went on about a year after Thriller came out (Victory tour, because he also released an album with The Jacksons titled Victory) opened here in Kansas City. And not a single song from the Victory album was played. I think it was just MJ giving his brothers a parting gift. Tickets were 30 dollars. Scalping is illegal in Missouri, or at least was then, and the classifieds were filled with ads like "#2 pencil - $200...includes two MJ tickets." Hundreds of them. Did I go? No. Could I have? Yes. But the girl that liked me and who bought the tickets was not a girl I had reciprocal feelings for and I would have felt bad just to go with her to see MJ and ruin the memory for her. But I've seen Prince 5 times, so I've got that.

His childhood issues definitely made him a wackadoo in his later years but Thriller is one of the greatest albums of all time.  The title "King of Pop" was definitely an accurate description of him in the early to mid 80s.

It crossed the color lines, paving the way for Black artists to rock out just like Jackson did with no less a guitar god than Eddie Van Halen.

Goddam I'm so f*cking tired of old boomers trying to beat everyone over the head with motherf*cking Jimi Hendrix. Eddie Van Halen was at least as technically capable as Hendrix was. And more importantly, he redefined technique in ways that had never been seen before. Jimi may have perfected what was there, but Eddie created brand new things out of the air. That's an entirely different level of genius. So please please PLEASE shut the f*ck up with the Hendrix worship already. Everyone's BORED with it by now.

I pulled out my vinyl yesterday, and came to the same conclusion.

4 bangers, 1 ok song, and 4 awful ones that should be erased from existence.  I had a pretty similar ranking to the list, except PYT was #5.

I'm Gen X, and Hendrix is straight fire.  The Are You Experienced is one of the finest albums ever made.  I love Van Halen too, but Jimi has a certain musicality that VH lacks.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest the OP wasn't saying Eddie wasn't a rock god, but instead taking issue with the idea that it was Micheal Jackson that showed Black folks how to rock.

FARKING LOL.  You're still talking about Hendrix here, mate.  Nobody's ever respected Eddie van Halen for jack shiat except banging Valerie Bertinelli.

I thought "Baby Be Mine" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something" should have been flipped. The former was did not chart, but was the better song.

Solitary opinion: I farkin' hate "Billie Jean." I never liked it even when it was new and fresh. And yes, I do think he is overrated. Not that he wasn't a great pop/soul singer, but the amount of fawning over him is, IMO, weird and misplaced. Just sayin'

Four great songs + filler qualifies as a great album. I came to that conclusion long ago. A real turd like a 9-minute sound experiment can sink the best album, though.

Unbelievable that it's been 40 years since he released this album. And people still listen to some of those legendary songs.
