But I would wager good money that somewhere amongst those tribes there are pimps and at least 1 of them goes by the name "Slickback."

The author of the piece seems to be writing from the perspective that climate change is not happening and/or will not have any noticeable consequences in itself. That's an empirical point that leaves me suspicious of the entirely.

Contrariwise, the variant "tribes" identified seem highlighted less by disagreement about empirical facts than by disagreements on policy preference; and it seems plausible that such policy disagreements exist among those who accept that climate has a trend to significant change, and may well have clusters on these lines.

Nohow, while it seems a more lucid than usual take from the "denial" side of what can be insultingly termed the denial/Doomer divide, I'm not sure any of the insights it suggests have much use that I can see.

The first part of that article was grating.

I mean why exactly would a large number of people all want to work on a global existential threat? It's a mystery!

The second part was dumb. Humans have a diversity of opinions when it comes to figuring a large problem out it's usually a benefit.

Of course with this particular problem the opinions of rich assholes are carrying an outsized influence that's going to end up killing millions and destabilizing our society, but at least they'll get an extra fraction of a percent on their returns before it all falls down.

There's legitimate nuance in terms of how we fix the problem though.

For instance, is using nukes in the short-term to get carbon emissions down immediately, at the price of creating an amount of radioactive waste that, while relatively small, also remains a problem for millennia, an acceptable trade-off? I would argue yes, definitely, but I can understand why not everyone agrees with that stance.

How heavily should we be funding fusion research? All other power generation options become moot once we have it, BUT it has no chance of being ready in time to solve the immediate crisis. I'm in the middle on that one - we should be actively funding it, but that can be our answer for the next 2-4 decades.

And so on. So yeah, you're an idiot if you STILL don't think climate change is being caused by the current practices of modern civilization... but there is - and should be - a lot of debate on the best way forward.

she's a crypto evangelist, based on her twitter, of course she's a denialist, otherwise she has to grapple with the fact that the stupid fad she's based her career on is contributing to the destruction of the environment for no reason.

...for at least someone who doesn't recognize that there is a "global existential threat".

Also, climate chance seems probably not an existential threat for the species; merely for humanity's technological civilization.

It seems a little better than that; perhaps something of an amateurish attempt at an institutional culture anthropological ethnography (and slightly less likely than some of those to be pure fiction). It reminds me a bit of various attempts to taxonomize the irreligious; some of those attempts only convey the prejudices of the author, but some also suggest some further insights about those they are attempting to describe.

On reflection, it might at least be possible to proffer this as a more nuanced model to a "denialist" who thinks that all the "doomers" are in a single one of those groups.
