Jack Edwards has been stuck in a middle school locker for 30 years.  He's normally a harmless homer dork but he seems to have crossed a line here.

WTF is subby going on about here? That headline reads like a train wrecked into a clown car, which then hit a semi carrying refrigerator magnet poetry.

He doesn't like Jack. End is story.

Jack is Jack; he's over the top.

But I love when people call certain announcers "homers" disparagingly when the majority of announcers are homers for their teams.

Let's be honest, though. On the scale of 1-10, where Vin Scully is a 10 and Hawk Harrelson is a -1,000,000, Jack Edwards is probably a 3, slightly above Joe Buck and somewhere behind Gus Johnson. He earns his paycheck, but I'm not sure even Bruins fans really like him.

It's not that homers can't also be good announcers, it's just that a lot of bad announcers are the over-the-top homers.

I prefer local announcers to be homers.  This is sports; I'm there for rah rah my team rules your team sucks, not "well we need to impartially examine all perspectives to reach an equitable conclusion".

Every year during the playoffs, you can listen to the radio broadcasts of both teams on the NHL.com website. I started doing this to follow the games at work, or when there were games that I could see on TV or the web. It's worth a listen to get an idea of what a good and a bad broadcast sounds like.

Yes, every team's announcers are going to be biased towards their own team. They usually travel with the team, they talk to the players and the coaches, they have ongoing relationships with the team employees, and in some cases the radio station is actually owned by the same people that own the team. At minimum, the radio station that pays them, has a paid contract with the team to broadcast the games.

It is impossible to be unbiased. However, the good broadcasters can be objective: a spectacular goal is spectacular goal regardless of which team scored it, and a dumbass penalty is a dumbass penalty regardless of the player that took it, and a bad call by the refs call go against either team. But, when the home team wins, yes, the announcers should yell louder and celebrate along with the fans, and they should be disappointed when the home team loses and/or plays badly.

There's supporting the home team and then there's supporting the home team to the denial of objective reality.

Pick a game that you have no emotional stake in. Listen to both broadcasts. It can be a huge difference in the quality of the broadcast to a relatively objective listener.

If you listen to the whole clip Edwards absolutely showered Maroon with compliments too. Of all the things you can pick on Edwards for this really isn't that bad. But he's an easy target and it's easy to claim outrage when everyone else is claiming it too.
