History has showed us there is no limit to the cruelty people can inflict on each other when its based on religious grounds even if it is only the invented pretext of religious justification.

The really smart Republicans have come to the realization that abortion is a losing issue for them and have begun distancing themselves from shiat like this.

Both of them.

Once again, Republicans prove that doctors are the only people who should be making these decisions, not politicians with "opinions."

(The Doctor) violated patient privacy laws by telling a newspaper reporter about the girl's treatment.

I don't think the doctor identified the patient herself or exposed any identifiable information (did he?), just the condition she had and the treatment she received. What patient privacy was violated? That's BS.

That whole ordeal last summer was sickening.

The right-wing media kept insisting it didn't happen and that the doctor lied. But it took competent journalists in Indianapolis and Columbus to prove those assholes wrong.

Of course the takeaway is to punish the woman for highlighting the negative consequences of banning abortion in the first place...

In typical GOP fashion, the problem isn't that something awful is happening. The problem is that someone spoke up about it.

Most of them know that "no abortion under any circumstances" is a deeply unpopular opinion. But if they just lie about what they're doing and what the effects are then a lot of their followers will go along with it anyway. That's why it's so important to punish this doctor for exposing them. They need to throw some fear into anyone else who might try.

The doctor did not identify the patient.  It is BS.  As is the AG's accusation that the doctor failed to comply with mandatory abuse reporting laws, as the abuse had already been reported to Ohio officials before the doctor even saw the child.

Incidentally, this is the same reason Republicans have backed away from whatever exceptions they used to pretty regularly support - because they increasingly don't believe women or doctors when they say abortion is the appropriate intervention.

What they wanted was to create an abstract possibility that an abortion could conceivably be obtained in a hypothetical situation, but never would that cross the line into actual reality. Now that they're seeing that people would dare to use these health exceptions and not condemn brood sows people to disability or death as they would prefer, they've dropped the fig leaf and it's "no exceptions, period".

People are missing the other part of the republican argument. They find white on white rape acceptable even if the person being raped is a child themselves, as long as a white child is the result. They want a predominantly white country with white rule.

2022-11-30 6:35:39 PM
I think an important thing to remember, that seems to get lost in the political weeds over this sort of thing, is what absolute heroes doctors like Caitlin Bernard are.

She performed this abortion, and publicly declared that she did it, knowing full well that she would probably face political retaliation and possibly the loss of her license as a result.  She performed this abortion knowing full well that it would probably result in goons threatening her and her family.  She knew this because she had previously considered getting out of performing abortions, after right wing goons threatened to kidnap her child.

She continued anyway, knowing the dangers she and her family would face at the hands of the unbalanced right wing in this country.

But she also knows that if she and those like her give in and walk away, as easy as it would be to do, women will suffer and die from lack of care.  It's a hell of a choice to make, and while I would like to imagine I am brave enough to make the same choice, I can't honestly say that it is true.  I am not a hero.  I am nowhere near as brave as Caitlin Bernard.

So let's not forget to call out heroes for what they are.  Caitlin Bernard is a hero.  And a patriot.  We need more doctors like her, not fewer.

Then private groups will start compiling and publishing the data.  And then the Texas legislature will pass laws criminalizing private entities publishing data about maternal morbidity.

It's really all so predictable.

How far do they get to push you before you start really doing something about it?

Back in the day when you could beat your wife and the cops wouldn't take it seriously... I knew some guys who took a wife-beater out back and gave him a beating of his own, along with threats to repeat that if they ever saw so much as a bruise on his wife.

Now, I know that tends not to work because the abuser will take out their frustrations on their chosen victim and worry about consequences later, but that's the kind thing that happens when proper authority isn't in place and taking care of things - you get vigilante action.

If a cop, judge, or politician was behind my daughter or wife or sister dying because a medically necessary abortion was denied, I would be looking for revenge, possibly up to and including murdering them.  That is where the GOP abortion ban leads.

I see they've moved on from insisting it didn't happen.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost told Fox News that law enforcement hadn't heard a whisper of evidence. Jim Jordan insisted it was fabricated. Kristi Noem said it was a lie by the liberal media to trap her. List goes on and it was a pretty long list IIRC.

But now, you know. It happened so the doc is bad or something.
