I'm always surprised that Nintendo never gets the hate that other major game companies - I guess it has something to do with their library, but they are extremely predatory compared to say...Xbox. Games cost more, they have made people buy and re-buy retro games many times over, shut down services, etc. They are also extremely over protective of their IP, basically suing any fan-made game to oblivion.

Used to be a Nintendo fan boy, but not the last 5-10 years.

Yeah, I'm a Nintendo fan boy but honestly, it's for nostalgia's sake.  The last console I bought* was the Wii and never thought I'd get a console again.

I recently fell into a fantasy that I'd play certain games with friends and the wife if we got a Switch.  The wife bought the Switch OLED for my bday and while I've played a few games here and there (demos mostly)...I've only purchased 2-3 games.

Honestly, should have just returned the Switch because I don't play it very much/at all.

/anyways, rambling here....

Yeah bullshiat you lying bastards. Nintendo is the most legal happy gaming company on earth, anyone with half a brain cell knows that if you use their products in any way without permission and make money off it, they will send the legal team after you.

You can basically bet the entire world economy on the truth being "we ignored multiple legal letters telling us to do this the right way but its totes not our fault because reasons"

Exactly the same thing happened to me. Bought a used one during COVID, ended up selling it about 6 months later because I never used the damn thing. The controllers are pretty awful too, and I don't have huge hands.

No, keep the switch. Get the Expansion + sub. Yes its 50 bucks but its only per year (you spend more on netflix) and thats where they are putting their back catalogue. Right now there is a good selection of SEGA, NES, SNES and N64 games, with strong rumors they are going to be adding the GBA to it sometime in the near future. And they keep adding games to it too, so what you have access to now is only now, later it will be moar

It's an awful movie by Nintendo, but that should hardly be surprising.

Nintendo has long been a massive dick about the use of their games. Add in some Chinese company signing an agreement with Nintendo and Nintendo shutting down competition seems a pretty obvious outcome.

Just look at the new Pokémon game. It runs terribly and looks incredibly ugly, and it sold incredibly well. Then I see people say it's still the biggest gameplay improvement so far in the series, but it's still just a GameBoy turn-based RPG but now with dated open world mechanics. People just buy their stuff still.

I'm normally a diff'rent stokes for diff'rent folks kinda guy, but I'm past that point with most Nintendo shiat. The people trying to hype their crap are deluded at best.

Until they did what they did with the Wii retro store and don't pass them from one console to another. 

If you bought retro titles on the Wii, they did NOT transfer to the Switch.

Nintendo is also notorious for creating artificial scarcity.  The company is run by assholes.

I don't know, the tourney organizers sound a little weasely with the language. It appears they didn't have any sort of formal agreement with Nintendo.
If that's what went down Nintendo owns and vigorously protects their IP that's all there is to it.

Nintendo's always been gunshy with Smash tourneys, mainly because the so-called community and many of the organizers are farking crazy

When I got the Switch, I did buy the Expansion online subscription (was actually surprised it was that cheap honestly).  I did play Super Metroid for nostalgia's sake...I played a few other NES or SNES games (even N64) but after a bit, I was 'done' with them.  I did buy the Crash Bandicoot game series (for my wife since she "grew up" with that series) as well as Mario Kart 8.

Only other game I've purchased was Ori and the Blind Forest:Definitive Edition.  I really enjoyed that game (although it ticked me off due to dying for silly reasons heh) and thought about buying the sequel to it (or even Hollow Knight), but I came to the realization again that after I beat the OatBF game, I'll never play it again (sorry don't think replaying on harder difficulty is worth it)...so while, yes, I enjoyed the game...why spend $30 on the sequel for ~10 hours of playtime?

I'm getting "old" now because looking at other games I thought about getting for the Switch (or even the PC) and I'm like, "meh"....the game that has kept my interest right now is Wingspan (my wife's cousin got us hooked lol).

I'll still play Overwatch 2 on my PC but...yeah...my dad instilled in me the "save, save, save" mentality which is great in one way but now I don't see the need to spend $60 for a new Switch game that I know will last maybe 10-12 hours and I'll never touch it again (looking at you Metroid Dread).

You dont have to get big name games. Switch is perfect for card games, board games, pool, short and simple stuff like that. Arcade style for quick pickup and no regrets if you stop halfway through

From what I can find, no it was not.

Nintendo didn't object to them and they had talks about Nintendo officially licensing them, but it never happened.

Now when Nintendo has an official licensee for Smash tourney's they are shutting down the competition.

Yeah, I heard a few games that were good (Fire Emblem comes to mind) but I'm not sure I'd like it...when I was looking at it, it seemed more like a "day job" than playing a game/story with all the things you do besides the battles.

I tried out the demo of Triangle Strategy and liked it but...a bit too much just pressing the 'next' button to go through lots of dialogue and very little battles/fighting.

<shrugs>

I'm open to suggestions though. :)

It's been the case for some time with Nintendo, if you like their first party stuff you have to buy their system. If you don't really like their first party stuff, there is pretty much no reason to buy it.

The Switch had a niche for playing older titles in a portable form factor for a while but you can get much better portable options now, so it is back to if there are enough first party games to be worth the cost.

Depends. There's basically one superior portable option that any non enthusiast would know about and outside of Steam it's not exactly going to be easy for the casual market to really make use of, although it is possible and it very much deserves credit for not being tied to a single software distribution platform

Right now it's basically glomming off of the old "can't show a movie without a license publicly," but fundamentally a videogame is not a movie, and AFAIK no one has bothered to stand up to Nintendo in court to find out.

Triangle Strategy has excellent gameplay, but there's an insane amount of dialog as well. The pace picks up a few hours in (and you can obviously just skip the dialog on replays), but it's definitely a hurdle to enjoying it for some people.

I've done business with various Japanese industrial firms over the last 15 years, and in many cases it has turned out that exclusive supply chain commitments made in high-end Tokyo bars over four-digit tabs by drunk salarymen have trumped profits and customer satisfaction.

Don't know I'd that's the case in this spot.

Well that blows. My kid goes to a video game camp thingy where they learn programming. They have a big tournament at the end of the week. I guess not anymore.

You can use people's products to make money without their permission.

The holders of IP have specific rights to the IP and its use that they hold. And whether streaming a game tournament using said game would violate those rights is an open question. But I doubt we will see anyone willing to go far enough to answer it.

Yeah, the issue wouldn't be the tourney itself, it's the potential associated branding/use of game art/logos and whatever and probably very specifically the potential streaming revenue, entrance fees and prize pool. No one's going to stop any convention or local meetup from just organizing an ad hoc tourney

Yeah, except that you are allowed to "knowingly and willfully" make money off of copyrighted material. Otherwise, used bookstores wouldn't exist. You're not allowed to show films for a profit without a license, but a game isn't a film.

Try again, and this time don't try to make yourself sound smart by saying things you think sound legal and official.

Video games, like films AND books are typically under very similar restrictions and regardless of what the scary FBI warning says, the "license" argument has been successfully challenged multiple times and pared back significantly.

It's the reason that despite the best efforts of the video game lobby, you can sell and resell your used games to anyone in any way in perpetuity. And you can advertise that you're selling those games using trademarked logos, names, characters, etc.

Selling and reselling things is also considered different than using them to make money.

But hey, feel free to throw some money away on a legal challenge that nobody else has apparently thought to try till now.
