True, "better than Russia" is an extremely low bar. But the West does clear it. Take a look at population graphs for Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Even when the U.S. was in the latter two, population rose. When Russia invades, population declines. Pretty obvious difference.

Russia is led by a warmongering dictator.  We can't afford to consider the country other than an enemy.  This isn't a discussion about the oppressed people under his rule, other than that acknowledging that is important for an accurate perspective.  Don't oversimplify.

I am thinking though that Biden and the Dems are going to have to get very crafty to get weapons, ammo and other aid to Ukraine over the next 2 years.

They should start reminding the Military contractors in each Republican district how much $$ comes in from supporting the war and get them to pressure their GQP reps to not put up a fight for funding.

Normally I'd say no, Russia is at war and atrocious things happen during war times. But, giving it another thought, they poison their enemies, they meddle in foreign elections either through social media or with agents acting as honey traps or or by different financial shenanigans, at home they preach how bad and decadent the west is all the while they are enjoying western luxury and the rule of law, meaning that whatever they are saying isn't true conviction but merely a charade to stay in power, and all that because of their imperialistic ambitions, which is the ultimate reason why NATO still exists. So, putting all that together, the whole russosphere is dangerous and they would resort to every terrorist instrument if it brought them closer to their end goal. Yes, Russia is a terrorist state.

Do you really feel it valid to compare death totals between a conflict that's 8 months old vs. an 8 year long conflict and a two decade long one?

Not to defend US and Afghanistan deaths, or yhe I vision at all which was bullshiat, there is a difference of 8 months versus 20 years, and a systematic extermination versus... unintended and combatant casualties.

Afghanistan was bad. Iraq as bad or worse. But the Ukraine is a farking human rights catastrophe and the rest of the world should have stepped in by now.

Terrorist state... I'm not sure there is such a thing.

Terrorism is a type of insurgency in which the terrorists try to prove that a government is incapable of functioning by conducting acts of terror.  If the government can't stop them, the populace eventually may conclude that the only way to stop the terror is to put the terrorists in charge.

State sponsored terrorism is when a state sponsors terrorist groups in another state in order to destabilize that state.  Like Iran and Hezbollah, or Russia in 2014 with the Donbas separatists.

What Russia is doing now in Ukraine are war crimes, not terrorism.  Maybe genocide, even.

The Ukraine / Russia war will end up with 1m+ deaths.

We are likely at the 250k mark killed & wounded now, between Russian military casualties (100k), Ukrainian military casualties (likely about the same), and an unknown number of Ukrainian civilian deaths.

And things are intensifying, not dying down.  Russia intends to keep mobilizing troops & throwing bodies at Ukraine until Ukraine breaks or Russia fractures.

Putin is trying as best he can.  He didn't get the full propaganda machine going, so he can't be quite as heavy handed without watching his back even more.

That's an arbitrary point to put a marker on "human rights catastrophe"; Afghanistan and Iraq were below the threshold and Ukraine above. They are all farking over the "human rights catastrophe"s.

Yes.

There's a thing called "genocide". Also "indiscriminate civilian casualties". Both are examples of "war crimes". Again, note that by your numbers, the deaths in Ukraine are >30,000/year. For Afghanistan, 170K / 20 years = 8,500/year. For Iraq, let's assume you mean just 2003-2011, so that's 150K / 8 years, so that's 18,750/year.

So you yourself concede that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is 1.6 to 3.5 times as deadly as the two U.S. wars.

The trendlines are clear. When Russia is attacking a country - see Afghanistan after 1980, Syria after 2011 - the population starts dropping, and doesn't stop until Russia withdraws. (They haven't technically withdrawn from Syria, but the amount of aid they can offer Bashar is way down since the invasion of Ukraine.

Conversely, when the U.S. invades, population growth slows somewhat, but it keeps rising. That's a difference in kind, not just quantity. I'd be curious - and possibly amused - if you could provide an alternative hypothesis to account for the data.

I wish iat were false.  I hope it is false and that it was a dentist.  But, I don't recall how long ago I saw a link dismissing the supposition. I'll look.
