Why anyone on god's green Earth thinks OTHER people care about their daily wordle score is a mystery.

"Hurr I got it in 3" means a lucky first guess. It's the puzzle master equivalent of "Hurr, I flipped a coin and got heads 3 times in a row"

Themed answers are not "puns".

The solution being "CLEAN" two days after a holiday is not even a themed answer. What is this person ranting about?

Wordle is a nice morning distraction that goes well with coffee #1.

My only complaint about Wordle is that sometimes it just boils down to luck. My Wordle streak is almost always ended by a puzzle like this.

S T E _ _

Let's say that takes two guesses, you have four more and it could be:

Steep
Stead
Stern
Stems
Stent
Stein

At that point it's just luck if you pick the correct one. You could be keying in unique letters and still miss it.

Agree, I hate that!

Lately my go to starting words haven't worked.  I generally use 'sword' first and then 'cable' as that covers a pretty good spread of consonants and vowels.  The last 2-3 weeks, I'm lucky to get one matching letter out of those first two words

You can still make a decision to eliminate more possibilities by guessing something like "nomad" (maybe not the ideal choice, but you can see what I mean) to narrow down the possibilities.  There's no chance it will be the correct guess, but it may come out better than continuing to guess multiple words that are STE__.

Yes, I have done that strategy too.

But sometimes you're down to two guesses, and you really think you know it must be this word or that word  and then it's neither.

My wife and I went back and forth with that for a while until I brought up that exact point.  "It doesn't matter how many guesses we took if we don't start with the same seed word."

So now, we agree on a starting word each time.

Also...  You might think you are a nerd.  But you probably didn't write your own version of the game so you could play whenever you wanted.

Well, I did.  Now can someone please donate $25,000 to me to make up for all the money I've never made despite how many of these silly projects I've released.

My only complaint is the author did not bother to research whether any on those answers differed from the original schedule laid out before the NYT took the puzzle over.  She may have a point, she may have stumbled on happenstance.  I don't care enough to check myself, I would hope the author's editor would insist on at least *some* work going into her rant.

The strategy in that situation is to choose a word that you know is wrong but that gives you more information.  Pick a word that doesn't have any of the any of the letters you have previously guessed.  Something like CHAIR would be a good follow up to an initial guess that reveals STE_ _ _

I lost, for that reason on Thanksgiving Day, because I wasn't aware that some hipster had made the game cute with thematic answers. Least, Beast, Yeast. Thanks for playing. When the answer popped up, Feast, I immediately pictured hipsters wearing oversized frame glasses sitting around a table at the NYT, "Oh, that would be fun." I don't share my score or talk about World, it's only fun if you're an attention-whoring navel-gazer. That (and basically the same thing said by others in this thread) is a good idea except you can't do that if you play in expert mode.  It won't let you play a word that doesn't use the letters that you've already found to be correct.

Yeah, I'm at that point after 4 guesses sometimes and just have to get lucky.

After 2 you can just use other words to eliminate (or get) the other letters but after 4... yeah, it's mostly just a crapshoot.  And that's been the reason for my misses almost every time I've not gotten in 6.

6M: My strategy's is not having a consistent start word.  Whatever feels like a good word that day.  Most of the solutions are in four.  Get lucky sometimes in three or two.  We won't discuss the other failures.

I always have 3 consistent start words that takes care of the 6 most common consonants (as stipulated by wheel of fortune plus a couple others, of course) as well as all 5 vowels and Y.

Probably 80% of the time I either have all 5 letters (or 4 if a double) after those 3 guesses or I have almost none and I've eliminated all the common letters, so what's left is usually pretty easy to figure out.

Doesn't always work, especially since it leaves only 3 guesses after that, but it's worked 93% of the time (and most of that is because of dumb situations where I get 4 letters in the right spot but the 5th can be a dozen letters and I just don't have enough guesses left and need to get lucky)
