Nothing in the article backs up the headline. The actual article is just about different looking fungi having a common genetic ancestor.

BTW, Toby Spribille is the guy who debunked the the gospel that Lichen  = Algae species + Fungus species.
In the majority of cases a lichen includes 2 different fungal species.
