"The 35-year-old has won 71 caps for Canada."

"...71 caps..." What the hell does that mean?
Well. besides I'm not a fan of 'kickball', obviously.

Hmmm. Apparently, it's about this flag being displayed behind him during the match.

More context about the flag, the taunting, etc. and is a better article than the farking linked one. It's not a fun story.

I've wondered this myself for years, so I finally Googled it.
Caps in soccer refer to the number of appearances a player has made with their senior national team, so their club is not affiliated with this number. The term is said to have originated from the United Kingdom, when players were awarded physical caps to mark their involvements in international matches.

"Caps" are appearances in international matches. In the real olden days, national cricket teams would present each member of their team with a cap (similar to a baseball cap) either for the first time they appeared or for each game. So to be "capped" meant that you had played for your national team, and the number of caps was the number of times you had played.

A Serbian keeper and a Croatian crowd? And after his coach said he was better than Croatia's highly lauded keeper? Yeah, totally wasn't going to end badly.

My apologies for the bad article. I keep submitting articles from The Hamilton Spectator but they:

1) Sometiems have a paywall but not always
2) Have a disappearing-reappearing paywall (for which Farkers blame Subby)
3) slashies!
