Not really a good idea.

Kids don't understand real life issues and they'll just follow what their parents do.

While I encourage young people to get involved in politics, since it affects their lives, I was not personally mature enough to vote responsibly at age 16.

/of course, some people aren't mature enough to vote at age 36...

<Peter Griffin voice:> That means TWO things!

GOP logic says they are old enough to parent a kid at ten, so why not allow voting?

Also, you got people in their 80s and 90s who can't remember the difference between gas and brake-but they get a ballot.

At 16-17, let them participate. FFS- enjoy elections while we still have them.

Possibly they'll take more interest in real-life issues if they feel they have a voice in them.

-or-

Yes, one thing teens are well known for is following their parents' advice.  🙂

I do question how young is to young to vote, considering how, back when I was 14, I leaned conservative because I thought feminists wanted to censor video games.

But you know what...? Considering how there's grown-ass adults that vote conservative thinking that it allows them to say Merry Christmas...? There's no line where you're mature enough to vote. Why not just let everybody vote?

In a shocking twist, the unborn vote overwhelmingly pro-choice. As it turns out, embryos are not just overwhelmingly pro-choice, but they're pro-abortion too. We interviewed one baby as to ask why and in between it's incessant wails, it said "why do you think it is that we cry when we're born...? It's because we and we alone understand the pain of our existence, and that to live is to suffer."

As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years old as the minimum age for employment

So, if you support a minimum voting age of over 14, you're in favour of people being taxed without any representation in government.

If you support a minimum voting age, why not a maximum voting age?

That reflects more on you as a person than on all 16 year-olds in general.

Because old people vote in really high numbers to protect their entitlement programs?  Sorry, they're well earned Medicare, Medicaid, and social security.  It's only an entitlement program for those under 65 who are not eligible to participate yet.

Lower it to 17 at the very least... and then have polling places at school on election day.  If we can't have mandatory voting a la the Census (you forgot that was mandatory, didn't you?), let's get them used to the idea early on.

As I sit in a classroom full of students who would be able to vote under this proposal, at least anecdotally, your misunderstanding of this age group is pretty hilarious.

They'll vote republican

Been asking for this for *years*.  You want the 18 to 25 year olds to vote?  Teach them how and why and show them actual results while you still have them as a captive audience.

You want them to vote for your party?  Give Gen Z these 2 years to vote for more than student council and you'll have a majority of them forever.

Are they morons? Many are, yes. Does that make them uniquely unqualified? No, and it helps to get them politically informed and active sooner.

If there were federal rules allowing high schoolers to vote, you'd better believe the reaction to school shootings would not be the same.

I support both. If you're old enough to work and be taxed, you're old enough to vote. You're just as misinformed as anyone else, and probably roughly as self-entitled. It's a dumpster fire anyway, but at least it can be a dumpster fire partially controlled by the poor bastards we're forcing to live through it.

And if you're old enough to retire, you're too old to vote. You're also too old for public office. Step aside gracefully and let the next generation have a chance to fix all the crap you've screwed up for them. What's that? You're 80 and still working? THIS IS EXACTLY THE CRAP THAT NEEDS FIXED. SHUT UP. SIT DOWN.

Exactly this. 18 is arbitrary. Lots of 18-year-olds are f*cking idiots. But so are a lot of 55-year-olds.

I'll once again point out that basically all of the arguments against enfranchising minors are the same arguments used against enfranchising women and people of color.

"They aren't smart enough to handle it!"
"They're too emotional!"
"They'll just cancel out other votes!"
"They don't really understand the world around them!"

And of course there's "They'll just vote the way their parents tell them!", which is exactly what we said about women and their husbands.

None of these were valid against women or people of color, and none of them are valid against minors.

We also don't stop adults with dementia or developmental disabilities from voting, so saying "their brains aren't good enough" is not a valid argument, either.

2022-11-30 12:25:42 PM
(OK, I'm sure there are people out there who block their demented relatives from casting votes, but that is significantly different from the state disenfranchising them.)

Let the 16 and 17 year olds vote. Can't be any worse than watching these assholes vote, then cry "STOLEN ELECTION!" when their candidate loses.
