Also true in the opposite direction, ironically. The last time Mexico failed to qualify for the Round of 16, it's because they were banned from even trying to qualify for the World Cup because they were using overage players on their U-20 team. While that's obviously not acceptable, it seems outlandish to penalize the senior team as a whole for that, and there's strong suspicion that the reason for the heavy punishment was to make it more likely that US would qualify for the '90 cup in advance of hosting in '94.

Be nice if FIFA could do something about parity between federations. Or maybe restrict the WC to UEFA and COMNEBOL. I'm fine with either, but I'm tired of teams from weakass federations being bigged up like they have a chance.

FIFA would really really like to have much stronger control over the federations, but UEFA absolutely do not want that.

I wonder what the "W" in WC stands for. If you want a tournament with just European teams, watch Euro.

Part of the magic of the World Cup is getting teams from around the world to compete against each other, and sometimes batshiat things happen like Saudi Arabia beating Argentina.

That's what I told him too, and it was the England match that made me so apprehensive.  It made his birthday though, so he was able to celebrate.
