We typically decorate after Thanksgiving, but what sucks is being in the North East this means hanging lights in the cold

This year we were going to decorate after Halloween and just not light the lights. However I was left unsupervised and found some orange lights, one thing lead to another and I ended up decorating for Thanksgiving

With the ubiquity and cheapness of color changing LED lights I've considered just leaving them up all year and displaying appropriate colors for whatever season.

Traditionally we've always done the day after Thanksgiving, going back to even when I was a kid. Everything comes down the weekend after New Year's.

My outside stuff isn't always on schedule as I pay my lawn guy to do the lights on the house to help him get through the slower winter months.  He usually gets the lights up a week earlier but I don't turn them on right away.

We have the year-round color changing lights. It was nice to do that two years ago and not have to worry about it again, at least until these suckers crap out on us.

I had a prominent old house in a little hamlet so I festooned it with holiday lights (day after Tgiving).  Now I live on a ten-house dead-end street.  One house puts up a wreath.  Most of us don't bother with anything.  It's glorious.

I'm replacing my decks/porches this fall/winter so I'm not putting up any lights on the house. I got a live christmas tree which I planted (temporarily?) in my front yard with lights on it and I might put an inflatable somethingorother by it.

A lot of lights showed up around me last weekend because the weather was fine. Really any time once it gets noticeably darker out in the evening is fine with me. I like to leave up a bunch of simple lights just so that it's not so dark and depressing at night. They stay up until at least March.

Anything after Thanksgiving is fair game, but I generally wait until Dec 1.

Seems like my neighborhood is waiting till Dec 1.  There were a LOT of halloween decorations around this 'hood (we moved in in Feb), so I was expecting an explosion of Christmas.  So far, not so much...

Course, we've not got much out right now either - lived in an apartment for 6 years and don't have much outdoor stuff and also don't have the budget to obtain much.

Our schedule used to be
Mid January Decorate for Valentines Day (red lights included)
Weekend after Valentines day decorate for St Patrick's Day (green lights)
Weekend after St Patrick's Day decorate for Easter (pastel lights)
Weekend after Easter decorate for Spring/Bees
Weekend before Memorial day Americana Decorations that stayed up through Labor Day(yay break)(some years red white and blue lights, but only lit for about an hour or two)
Weekend after Labor Day(or sometimes on Labor Day) Fall
Around October first Halloween(purple, green, orange lights)
After Halloween Thanksgiving (orange lights)
Weekend after Thanksgiving Christmas with Christmas lights that remained lit until January 2nd

Huh.

I just realized that if I mass produced some lighted decorations of Zero from "Nightmare Before Christmas" stealing a turkey, you would only have to put up one decoration to cover all three holidays.

Patent pending.

Hung mine up a few weeks ago. Set up the timers for them on Sunday after we put up the tree. I'll leave the timers on until New Year's, then take the lights down whenever the weather is nice enough.

I think traditionally, decorations were supposed to go up on the first day of Christmas (24/25th Dec, depending on tradition), then come down on twelfth night, either 5/6 Jan.

Yeah, it's a bit different from modern traditions.

My neighbor across the street finally got smart this year. Every year he puts up a big display.  In prior years he spends most of Thanksgiving weekend putting it up, usually in miserable weather.  This year he put it up in early November when the weather was in the 60-70s.

It doesn't get turned on until Dec 1st regardless of when it's placed in the yard.
