I wonder if any of the Iranian players can approach the US players and ask how to defect/get asylum in the US.

I mean seriously if these are your tactics at what point if you're in a position of power in Iran you can't self reflect and say... maybe we're the bad guys?

On the other hand it almost sounds like propaganda.

It's a nice thought but if they get caught doing that their families WILL be executed after being tortured.

I get the feeling a second Iranian revolution may be in the works, and it's about goddamn time.

Since 1998, federal law (viz., the United States Code 36 U.S.C. § 301) states that during a rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is displayed, all present including those in uniform should stand at attention; non-military service individuals should face the flag with the right hand over the heart; members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present and not in uniform may render the military salute; military service persons not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note. The law further provides that when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed. Military law requires all vehicles on the installation to stop when the song is played and all individuals outside to stand at attention and face the direction of the music and either salute, in uniform, or place the right hand over the heart, if out of uniform. The law was amended in 2008, and since allows military veterans to salute out of uniform, as well.[87][88]
The text of 36 U.S.C. § 301 is suggestive and not regulatory in nature. Failure to follow the suggestions is not a violation of the law. This behavioral requirement for the national anthem is subject to the same First Amendment controversies that surround the Pledge of Allegiance.[89] For example, Jehovah's Witnesses do not sing the national anthem, though they are taught that standing is an "ethical decision" that individual believers must make based on their conscience.[90][91][92]

Ahead of Tuesday's match, an Iranian media outlet called for the U.S. to be expelled from the World Cup after the USMNT's Twitter account posted a scrubbed version of Iran's flag on the social media site.

One Iranian commentator called it "an outrage" and complained that "Iranians would never show such disrespect to a nation's flag!"

The players should do the same thing that any American patriot does when the national anthem is played at a sports event: move your lips and mumble something like "wassa mummble walla walla" so it looks like you're full of pride for your country but can't be damned to actually sing the words.

CSB: I have absolutely no interest in NASCAR but a friend bought me a ticket and took me to a race. I saw these MAGA hat wearing hicks waving flags (US, Gadsden, Trump 2024 and Confederate) but unable to loudly sing the anthem. Most of them didn't so much as move their lips. When I started singing loudly I got some nasty looks. Either they thought I was mocking them (a little) or that I was one of "those people" who loves showtunes and enjoys singing (no to the former, yes to the latter).

I don't know.  Whatever you may think of socialism, "the Internationale" is a biatchin' tune.  It's right up there with the "Marseillaise" as an anthem (no coincidence that both were written by French guys).

The Iranian anthem, in contrast, just sounds like one of those bland Soviet-puppet-state anthems, going on about how "our tractors are mighty and our factories have exceeded their quotas!"  And it's in an odd time signature - it seems like a slow 6/8, which just doesn't feel right for an anthem.

Now, if you want to talk about blatant rip-offs, you can start with how Australia's anthem is virtually a copy of "the Maple Leaf Forever."

It's really a shame that our side wasn't better prepared for the exchange - they should have been expecting Iran to make it political and run a distraction routine exactly like this.

And there were so many opportunities to make their side look like absolute shiat using those questions, exactly as you did.

"Yep, I'm okay representing a country that doesn't threaten my players with torture and prohibit them from speaking with foreigners by threatening their families. And you aren't an expert on American linguistics, so don't tell me how to speak my own language. Any other questions, you farking shill?"

You are correct, we just force school employees to hold the pledge and single out kids who don't participate so they can be identified as troublemakers and ostracized by their classmates. In the case of prayer during team sports, they can also lose their position on the team if they don't participate. Thank you SCOTUS!

Yes, we've all been alive since 9/11/2001 and are aware what happens at every ping pong tournament to the NFL.

All you have to do is tweet the magic words "won't someone rid me of this priest, er, player?". And suddenly 50 people with AR 15s will be on their way to tell the person why they were wrong to not shove a red white and blue dildo up their arse and scream until their throat was bloody during the national anthem AND my country tis of thee.
