The shiatty thing is I play soccer with a half-dozen or so Iranians and absolutely none of them support the government.  One went so far as to pay to have the symbol of the resistance movement embroidered on all our jerseys this season.  There's such a sense of fatalism.

Not my post but I completely agree with the sentiment. Let's start off with the way the US treats its people - no social safety net, ridiculous underfunding of education, and a ruinously costly health care system that prioritizes wealth extraction over patients. Corrupt violent police. And gun ownership rates are similar in Finland but gun crime is miles beneath the US. And apparently at least half the US is racist.

In complete sincerity, the (attempted) point the reporter is making is "Seriously, USA, clean up your own shiat before you comment about another nation's toilet."

The validity of that argument is, of course, questionable at best. But they are extremely making a "NO U" / "all nations are bad therefore they are equally bad" argument.

I think I speak for all right thinking people when I say the government of Iran and all that support them can fornicate themselves with an iron stick.

The Iranian team should be lauded for standing with the protestors. Too bad their families have been threatened with death and torture by their government if they don't fall into line.

That's not very surprising. I'm originally from Düren, not far away from where Limburgish is spoken. Let's say that I'm very familiar with the resentments all across Europe towards Germans, even if you were obviously born decades after the war. Going abroad always went with the question if and how people would react to your nationality, once they found that out. In so far I am sorry for the young Russians who will be feeling the brunt of Putin's actions for many years to come.

"Stupid Prussians" is probably still used among Belgians. And when I went to the university of Maastricht for a semester, I remember one girl my age who was very strongly against any relationships with German guys. Not all of them, but 50+ years after the war the force of that was unexpected.

Agreed. You could tell he was trying very hard not to fall into a trap by being defensive or testy. They wanted him to screw up so bad.
