If they can get their wheel-belts up to 50 mph, they'll chase you down the street and throw the bomb just in time for detonation before touching your head.

I'm placing my bet, this will cause even more deaths of unarmed suspects.
I'm putting all my money on this being the outcome.

Cops are basically abusive parents.

Explosives = evidence goes boom, less proof of wrongdoing, no paperwork

Um, win?

Here's the "hope" part:
Cops are always afraid of everything at all times.  They shoot early and often because a toy cellphone might be a secret gun in the wrong-colored hands.
With robots they can wait an extra minute or so to determine if a suspect is actually dangerous and not a disabled child doing his homework

/before killing him

Considering how they treat people having medical emergencies.  I don't hold much hope. They don't seem to understand the difference between not obey and unconscious.  I wish I was be hyperbolic.

wasn't this a sci fi story on NPR a few years back? a bomb diffusing robot was repurposed to subdue suspects, keeping police out of danger. but on the day it was ordered to kill, it got a little Asimov and had a crisis of conscience.
but that story was fiction...

Let's just get on with it and give them some of those small battlefield nukes. Surely the principle of mutually assured destruction will force everyone to deescalate. If not, well hey, problem solved either way.

On a related note, why the fark are we completely out of coffee?

Sensible gun regulation, or murderous police robots?

We'll take the murderous police robots.

2022-11-29 8:40:41 AM
These aren't robots in the sense of autonomous units that act on their own, these are RC cars with a lot of doo-dads and tools and for dang certain, a lot more resilient. They HAVE operators. Who are using some limited sensors and cameras, to react to situations that maybe they are up to, and maybe not.

It comes down to what role does the public want the police to play? We can do combat drones. We can do combat drones that are pretty good at lining up shots and releasing payloads. We can send in drones that will track and scout ahead pretty good too, so that police know an area before they hit it.

What people are worried about, is that police will rely on tool sets that limit their choices. An armed drone isn't exactly going to be able to scoop up a child and carry them to safety. An armed drone can't really talk someone down. The limitations of the technology are troubling, because police are seeking to limit their options.

I doubt it.
"He pointed a gun shaped object at me through the monitor, and I was afraid for my robot's safety, so i detonated it. It was later determined that the object was his ID, but at the end of the day we are just trying to get home to our familes."

Police have been bombing civilians for a while. I think they should usually wait a situation out. But I know you can't close a city block for a week while a group of well equiped people hold up in a bank shooting people or something like that. The compound out west folks. Fence it off and let nothing in or out, not even snacks. That will sort itself out.

"Robots shall not be used as a Use of Force against any person," but an SFPD revision changed that language to "Robots will only be used as a deadly force option when risk of loss of life to members of the public or officers are imminent and outweigh any other force option available to SFPD."

All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
